Job overview
We have an excellent opportunity for an experienced Anatomical Pathology Technologist to join our friendly team at Leighton Hospital. Working with the Mortuary Manager you will have responsibility for delivering a full range of mortuary activities and take personal responsibility for the undertaking of all duties related to admission, identification and safe storage of deceased bodies for post mortem examination in accordance with the service procedures.

The post will be based at Leighton hospital but will require some rotation across all sites in the NMCPS Network including Royal Stoke, County, Leighton and Macclesfield Hospitals.
An interesting and exciting job opportunity has arisen for a qualified Anatomical Pathology Technologist to join the mortuary team across the NMCPS network.
Applications are invited from versatile individuals who are good team workers with excellent organisational and interpersonal skills. The ability to prioritise tasks together with effective communication is essential.
You will assist with the development and testing of emergency response plans for excessive deaths and mass fatalities. You will also facilitate viewings for families and next of kin, and police identifications in conjunction with the HM Coroner for Cheshire. You will be required to undertake a number of administrative tasks associated with case file preparation, protocols and working as part of a team. The post holder will be required to hold a Level 3 Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology or equivalent and have demonstrable experience of working in a mortuary setting. Experience in high risk and forensic post mortem examinations would be highly desirable.
You will assist the Mortuary Manager in supervising, coordinating and monitoring the performance and daily work schedules of all mortuary staff across Leighton and Macclesfield mortuaries.

The University Hospital of North Midlands, Mid Cheshire and East Cheshire NHS Trusts are working collaboratively to form a Pathology network in line with the NHSI directive.
The North Midlands and Cheshire Pathology Services (NMCPS) formed in December 2020 and is a network collaboration between The University Hospital of North Midlands (UHNM), Mid Cheshire and East Cheshire NHS Trusts (MCHFT). UHNM are the host provider of the network. NMCPS has mortuaries on our Macclesfield, Leighton, Stoke and Stafford sites.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
As a deputy mortuary manager you would be required to work alongside Mortuary Technologists (APTs) and undertake the daily tasks as part of the mortuary team to provide care to deceased patients.
You will be expected to assist with the care and handling of deceased patients and to meet face to face with bereaved relatives, funeral directors and other external agencies.
Acting with compassion you will put deceased patients at the centre of all you do.
You will communicate effectively with the mortuary team.
The mortuary core opening hours are 8am till 4pm with a rotational on call to cover the service 24/7, however, during winter months (November – March) the core hours are extended to accommodate for changes in service provision due to the demand on capacity.
You will show courage by embracing new ways of working and doing the right thing by the people you care for, including speaking up when you have concerns.
The post holder will be required to perform a range of routine and non-routine tasks within the mortuary, following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) including the Pathology Quality Policy to provide support to the mortuary manager in order to ensure a high quality service.
To plan, organise and carry out own routine work in all sections of the Mortuary as required by the mortuary manager.
To assist in the development of mortuary procedures and protocols for the mortuary service.
To work within the written Policies and Procedures of the Department especially in relation to Health and Safety and Quality. Assists with the monitoring of quality standards within the department.
Maintains clinical records in relation to work carried out.
To support the mortuary manager in providing a professional and dignified mortuary service for the trust covering the 2 mortuaries in Cheshire for the NMCPS network.
