Job overview
An opportunity has arisen for a full time Consultant in Medical Microbiology, Medical Microbiology/Infectious Diseases or Consultant Clinical Scientist to join the team of five consultants based at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton, Somerset. This post is part replacement and part new, having been created to support the growing demand for a high quality clinical microbiology service across the county.
Each Consultant takes on a lead role, including Infection Control Doctor, Antimicrobial Stewardship and Clinical Service Lead, which rotate by mutual agreement between the Consultants in post.
The full time post has a 10 PA allocation with category A rating (5%) for on call based on a 1 in 5 rota. Applications are welcomed from those approaching their CCT (or equivalent) certification, as well as experienced Consultants, including Consultant Clinical Scientists. We are open to discussing job share, or part time arrangements and there is flexibility to meet the needs of individual applicants.

The pathology services in Somerset are consolidated into South West Pathology Services (SPS), a public-private partnership which is majority NHS owned. The Department of Microbiology is UKAS-accredited and the annual workload is approximately 490 000 requests per year. The department serves Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton, Yeovil District Hospital, community hospitals in Somerset and a population of approximately 465,000.
To qualify for this role you will be a member of the Royal College of Pathologists (or equivalent). You will either hold or be eligible for specialist registration, holding a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT or equivalent) or be within 6 months of award of CCT by the interview date. You will also have demonstrable clinical experience/ focus in addition to laboratory experience.
However, as a team we are in a fortunate position to be able to offer the opportunity to support International Medical Graduates (IMGs) with obtaining their CESR, so that you can gain specialist registration with the GMC. As a Trust we are in a strong position to be able to support you through this process, and we have a number of colleagues who have successfully gone through this route.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
This is a part replacement & part new whole time Consultant Medical Microbiologist (with or without Infectious Diseases) or Consultant Clinical Scientist employed by Somerset NHS Foundation Trust. Any candidate who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time, will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues. The post is based in the Pathology Department at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton.
The Pathology services of Somerset NHS Foundation Trust and Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust are consolidated into Southwest Pathology Services (SPS), a public-private partnership which is majority NHS owned. The service consists of an off-site hub laboratory, in Taunton, and an Essential Services Lab in each acute hospital.
The post holder is managerially accountable to the Chief Executive of Somerset NHS Foundation Trust through the Clinical Lead for Microbiology and the Clinical Director.
Qualifications and Selection Criteria
Applicants will be expected to be members of the Royal College of Pathologists or show equivalent experience and training.
Applicants must hold Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC), or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT

As detailed above, building is already underway for a new surgical and Critical Care centre encompassing 2 Interventional Radiology compatible theatres and an Acute assessment hub to support care for patients requiring emergency assessment.
The Trust sees IR as integral to the development of all acute and complex services.
