Job overview
We have an exciting opportunity for a GI Physiologist to join our team of Healthcare Scientists working in the Clinical Measurement and Engineering Unit of Northern Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering. Our service receives adult referrals from County Durham and the Newcastle upon Tyne area, performing over 300 patient investigations annually. The service operates at two sites, the University Hospital of North Durham in Durham City and the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle upon Tyne. Although travel between both sites will be required, this post will mostly be based at University Hospital North Durham.
We are highly motivated and wish to provide the highest standards of care. Our service is working towards achieving accreditation to the IQIPS quality standard, and our team actively participates in and leads clinical research projects.

The post-holder will primarily be responsible for performing and reporting oesophageal and anorectal investigations on patients using technologies including high resolution manometry, pH impedance studies, endoanal ultrasound and rectal sensitivities. Additionally, the post-holder will support the service lead by reviewing referrals, developing and maintaining procedures in the department’s quality system, and preparing activity reports.
A contribution to the department’s wider activities and its research, development and training activities is also encouraged. The post-holder is expected to hold, or to work towards and achieve, relevant professional registration, usually as a Clinical Scientist. Consequently, experience of physiological measurement, excellent patient handling and inter-personal skills, and an enthusiasm to extend one's knowledge and skills, are essential.
Applications are invited from candidates with a first or second class degree in a relevant science or engineering subject. The ideal candidate will have experience of contributing to clinical services and research and development projects, a good knowledge of anatomy, physiology and statistics, and be eager to work in a busy clinic.

- Contributes to the delivery of the service in their specialist area.
- Supports the development, implementation and audit of clinical and
organisational strategies within the Service via the quality management system. - Performs a range of advanced healthcare science activities.
- Provide highly specialist advice and training to staff within own area and other professionals.

The GI physiology team has been expanding over recent years. This has been driven by a local need for an established GI physiology unit to provide a good quality service. We utilise some of the most advanced technical equipment available for GI physiology and all our testing procedures follow national and international guidelines. However, the patient experience always remains central to our values. Therefore, we work flexibly and adapt to patient needs.
