Our Waste & Recycling Apprenticeship Pathway consists of an 18-month long opportunity to build on your communication skills and team working skills, whilst working towards a level 2 Waste Resource Operative qualification. Following the initial application process, successful applicants will join Islington Council’s Street Environment Team.
In November 2020 Islington council set out its Vision 2030 strategy to reach net zero, which includes plans for sustainable and affordable energy supply, green economy and planning, and natural environment and waste. This apprenticeship is ideal for those who wish to play their part in helping the environment and are passionate about the borough they live in and you will play a vital role in helping us to achieve our ambition.
To apply for this apprenticeship, you must:
- Be aged 16 or above
- Be unemployed (or working no more than 16 hours)
- Be an Islington resident or Islington care leaver or a student at an Islington secondary school currently or within the last 12 months
- Not currently be qualified in street cleansing or similar discipline at level 2 or above

The Job - Working as a Waste and Recycling Apprentice for the Council you will:
- Carry out general cleansing operations around street cleansing, grounds maintenance and park area cleansing as directed by your Supervisor.
- Support the team in improving recycling in the borough and help correct waste segregation streams to achieve this within street cleansing.
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions within agreed shift patterns.
- Develop IT skills using mobile devices to report Public Realm issues.
- Develop strong professional relationships with your own team and with others we work alongside and to whom we provide services.
Training and Development – Within your role you will:
- Complete a Level 2 Waste Resource Operative Apprenticeship funded by the Council. This will be a blended learning approach which will include self-study, interactions with your training provider on a face to face/online basis and undertake remote learning whilst completing tasks in the workplace. Dedicated time will be given to you to support your development
- Join the apprenticeship personal and professional development programme that will involve a series of varied development activities and events throughout your apprenticeship with the Council

Your training will be supported in the workplace by allowing dedicated time in your working week to focus on your studies in addition to having access to a network of colleagues from within the organisation and the training provider to support your development journey.
After you have successfully completed your Apprenticeship Pathway you will have gained valuable workplace experience and attained a professional qualification which will improve your chances of finding work either within the Council or with another employer or help you move on to a higher level apprenticeship elsewhere. You will have networked across the Council and be aware of the internal job market during your time with us and we will provide support on your approach to the wider job market as part of your development programme.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Undertake a development programme leading to a Level 2 qualification as part of an apprenticeship. You will spend 20% of your contracted hours towards the timely completion of your training programme.
- Actively participate in your own development plan under the supervision of your line manager and the training provider. This includes meeting the needs of the training provider and qualification by meeting deadlines and action plans.
- To work under supervision to develop skills and experience in:
- To carry out general cleansing operations around street cleansing, grounds maintenance and park area cleansing as directed by your Supervisor.
- To support ways of working to improve recycling including the correct segregation of waste streams including recording and reporting waste collection problems such as contamination or incorrectly stored waste through the established reporting system.
- Liaising with the public on behalf of the Council and Environment and Regeneration department, responding positively and sensitively to customer enquiries or complaints and reporting where necessary to the Supervisor.
- Working as an individual or as part of a team to provide high quality customer focussed Environmental Services, including all types of waste collection, street cleansing grounds maintenance and park keeping.
- To give full cooperation in the implementation and operation of the latest information and communication technology, which will be designed to enhance efficiency safety and communication amongst teams.
- Support the team to undertake safely the collection of all types of waste: cleansing of streets or parks and open spaces and work individually or as part of a team and ensure that segregated waste streams are not contaminated with non-conforming material or waste.
- Constructively take part in meetings, supervision, seminars and other events designed to improve communication and assist with your own development and that of your role.
- Undertake other duties compatible with your learning and development as required.
- Use information technology systems to carry out duties in the most efficient and effective manner.
- Achieve personal performance targets, as agreed by your line manager. Carry out duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Council’s customer care standards.
