Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions.
Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.

Job overview
We are looking for an experienced Band 5 or 6 Registered Nurse who is driven, enthusiastic and innovative with excellent experience and expertise in the care and management of patients in the Acute & General Medical setting. You must have a love of teaching supporting and developing nurses to reach their potential.
This is an opportunity for a 6 month secondment as a Deputy Practice Development Nurse. You will be working within and supporting the Acute and General Medicine Practice Development Nurse Team within St. Thomas’ Hospital who provide an excellent service to our Newly Qualified Nurses and Nursing Associates, as well as helping our Registered Nurses grow, develop and take on new roles

The post holder will need to have a passion for teaching, assessing and developing the nursing team.
In this role, you will be involved in all aspects of nurse training including:
- Management and delivery of induction programmes for newly qualified nurses as well as those who are new to the Trust
- Assistance in reviewing and planning courses & educational programmes
- Delivering formal & informal teaching to the Nurse Teams
- Provision of hands on clinical support for new starters and other learners in the department.
The successful applicant will demonstrate a level of motivation and commitment that will support the development of our nursing staff in order to achieve their professional goals.
You will be seen as a role model for best practice and should be able to lead, inspire and demonstrate this in the Acute Medicine setting as well as supporting others to achieve this.
The role requires you to have excellent communication skills and be confident to work under your own initiative. Data capture and gathering will be part of the role.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Duties and Responsibilities
4.1 Education/Staff Development
To identify training and development needs of staff within the area in
accordance with local and national policies.
Support staff in the provision of regular local and relevant teaching and
training sessions including provision of ‘buddied’ clinical time to facilitate on the job learning.
To be a source of highly specialist clinical and educational knowledge
To act as an advocate for patients within the department, to ensure a
patient orientated approach to the delivery of care and to meet standards
within the NHS Plan and other relevant guidelines.
To ensure that patients’ receive high quality clinical care and a good
patient experience, having regard for their customs, religious beliefs and
doctrines.
Recognise and avoid situations that may be detrimental to the health and
wellbeing of the individuals.
The post holder will also be required to deliver training as required
Tailor a programme of orientation for new staff members and arrange an
ongoing programme of training for qualified and unqualified staff and
overseas nurses requiring adaptation in the care and management of
patients within the speciality.
Provide support to staff completing clinical and legal nursing documents to
ensure they are completed accurately and legibly and that their relevance
is understood and confidentiality maintained in accordance with Trust
policy and NMC guidelines.
Works with Sister/Charge Nurse to contribute to standard setting for
nursing practice
Participates in the training of staff to monitor the quality of care delivered
using clinical standards and takes necessary action to ensure excellence in
nursing practice. Bases standards upon relevant research where possible.
Participates in Individual Performance Review of staff when appropriate
using the Scope of Professional Practice.
Develop and implement training programmes for nurses to expand their
clinical skills in accordance with the Trust’s standards
4.2 Professional Responsibilities
To be accountable for care given and comply with the NMC Code of
Conduct, working within the framework of the UKCC’s scope of
professional practice.
To ensure compliance and implementation of Trust policies and
procedures, relevant legislation, Nursing and Midwifery strategy and
Clinical Governance standards are understood and practised by staff. Acts
according to the Health & Safety Act and manual handling practice
ensuring that all training of staff is documented.
Practises in accordance with the professional direction as stipulated in the
Trust’s Nursing & Midwifery strategy.
To take personal responsibility for promoting a safe environment and safe
patient care by identifying areas of risk and following the Incident, Serious
Incident and Near Misses reporting procedure.
Have a visible presence within the clinical setting.
Is responsible for own professional development and an awareness of
clinical educational developments. Agrees own personal, professional and
service objectives according to Individual Performance Review with
Manager.
4.3 Research and Development
Actively disseminate research findings as a positive role model through
lectures, teaching and other appropriate communication methods
Assist in the bench marking of nursing practice and evaluate the impact on
new practices implemented.
4.4 Management duties
Communicates with staff in all areas of the Trust
Act all times to ensure that staff, practise Trust and Unit policies and
procedures.
Responsible for monitoring performance against competency requirements
Facilitate the sharing of best practice both within the Trust and externally.
Education/ Qualifications:
RN1/ RN2/ RN12 or RN Child Registered Nurse on the NMC register. To hold the appropriate level for the area of speciality. 1st Degree. Specialist professional knowledge of mentorship, education and development practice. Evidence of continuous personal, professional and academic development.
Previous experience:
Significant post registration experience within a acute and community setting. Deliver training sessions / programmes. Experience of mentoring/ supervising/ assessing nurses and students in practice. Experience of managing a team. Experience of involvement in educational initiatives.
