Your Responsibilities

What you’ll do

• Ensure that accurate records and information systems are maintained.
• Ensure the safe control, custody, and administration of all drugs within the perioperative area in accordance with Trust Policies and national legislation.
• Assist the Team Leader to ensure that clinical practices accurately reflect trust values
• Inform Team Leader/Theatre Manager if there is a change in circumstance which may affect safe and competent practice.
• Assist the Team Leader to actively lead in the development of their specialised areas within the peri-operative services.
• ensure attendance of mandatory training sessions as required.
• Able to demonstrate relevant IT and keyboard skills to enable electronic data collection and communication.
• Effectively communicate with all disciplines, patients/clients and relatives.
• Ensure incident forms are completed and acted upon and the manager is informed accordingly.
• Assist the team leader to effectively lead a multidisciplinary team under pressure in, at times, a highly stressful environment, including emergency situations as required.
• Ensure the security of the working area is maintained.
• Ensure the provision of a safe working environment for the staff, patients and visitors at all times in line with the Health and Safety at work act.
• Attend routine departmental meetings.
• Ensure adequate stock levels of consumables are maintained and order
• equipment and supplies as delegated
• To provide high quality peri-operative and post-operative care to all patients by assessing care needs and developing, implementing, and evaluating them without supervision.
• Ensures all equipment is cleaned, checked daily, and maintained and takes appropriate action with faulty equipment as per company policy.
• Be responsible for the accurate accounting of all disposable and non-disposable instrumentation before, during and following a clinical
• Participates and supports training in new equipment.
• Ensure the safe positioning and transfer of patients within the department in accordance with trust and theatre policy and procedures.
• Ensure availability and readiness of all equipment and instrumentation for all cases.
• Ensure the work area is cleaned and prepared in accordance with infection control policy.
• Participates in audit or research.
• Ensure that the handling of specimens is carried out safely and the recording of collection is accurate.
• To maintain standards of infection control within the unit and during clinical care and to assist patients to maintain their own infection control needs

What we’re looking for

We are currently seeking highly motivated individuals to join our expanding team, our services currently cover Neurosciences, Cardiac, ENT OMF vascular thoracic CEPOD trauma HPB GI Robotics, Pead’s including Recovery, Endoscopy, Interventional radiology, we also have a hybrid suit, as well as being a regional trauma centre for Southampton.

The successful candidates will be required to work an internal rotation shift pattern to provide 24/7 cover for the Trauma Service at Southampton and CEPOD.

The operating theatre suite is currently expanding, currently our theatres comprise 27 centre block and neurosciences theatres in five locations, providing a range of services from cardiac (four theatres) to paediatrics (seven theatres), and all specialties in-between.

Our major trauma theatres and elective orthopaedic theatres are innovative and ground-breaking within the trauma orthopaedic field, and our neurosciences team are at the forefront of their specialty with surgeons who are recognised by fellow professionals as leaders in their field.

Our paediatric service cares for children in all specialties including cardiac, neurosciences, spinal corrective surgery, oncology and paediatric orthopaedics. Our adult services include upper GI and colorectal services, where we have begun a programme of intra operative radiotherapy (IOERT), new to the colorectal service, as well as developing our robotics team. Our laparoscopic theatres have been newly refurbished and have state of the art facilities.

We also supply anaesthetic services across the Trust and to many satellite areas including radiotherapy and interventional radiology. We have integrated anaesthetic facilities and recovery unit.

The Trauma Teams will handle patients transferred directly from the accident / injury or from Trauma Units and A&E Departments across the region. These will include severely injured patients arriving by road or air ambulance and we need individuals that can help us provide a complex pathway involving numerous skilled staff and access to emergency treatment 24 hours a day.

As a newly qualified Operating Department Practitioner, you’ll have the qualification relevant to your registration with the HCPC. We will give you post-registration preceptorship and supernumerary period while we support your transitions from student to qualified practitioner. Weather your interest is scrub, anaesthetics, or recovery, we have a programme ready to support you starting your career. 

We are looking for excellent communication skills when caring for patients and within the multi-disciplinary team, to provide high quality, holistic, individualised care to all patients while demonstrating our trust values.
