Consultant Stroke Services
NNUHFT is a vibrant, aspirational organisation, working towards becoming a Neurosciences Centre of Excellence to respond to the National Stroke Plan. We are looking to add to our established Stroke Services team by appointing a seventh substantive, whole time (10PA) Consultant position, to support the expansion of the Stroke Directorate, including the development of mechanical Thrombectomy Services.
A candidate who is unable for personal reasons to undertake the duties of a whole-time post will receive equal consideration. If such a candidate is appointed the job content will be modified as appropriate in consultation with consultant colleagues and local management.

The comprehensive stroke service at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides a full range of services including hyper-acute, rehabilitation and TIA. The Hospital has 1,000 beds and includes more specialist services such as oncology and radiotherapy, neonatology, orthopaedics, plastic surgery, ophthalmology, rheumatology, paediatric medicine and surgery. This Trust is currently developing a mechanical thrombectomy service which should be operational in 2022.

Working for our organisation
NNUHFT provides a large, high volume, stroke service, with 1200 strokes admitted per year. The well-established Stroke Medicine Directorate team are working towards our goal of becoming a Neurosciences Centre of Excellence, with Neurosciences and stroke being one of the Trust’s key strategic priorities. As part of this, one of our key ambitions is to become a consistently SSNAP ‘A’ rated organisation. This work is supported by a dedicated MDT of Neurosciences Nurses, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Dieticians and Psychologists.
The NNUHFT manages the Stroke pathway from the emergency admission, through the Hyper Acute stroke Unit (HASU) and Acute Stroke Unit ASU. Our patients have access to both an Early Supportive Discharge (ESD) team and an offsite rehabilitation unit (Beech Ward) which are indirectly managed by the NNUHFT.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
You will be based at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) with a rotation to our offsite Stroke Rehabilitation Unit at Beech Ward, based at Norwich Community Hospital, part of Norfolk Community Health & Care NHS Trust.
The role is for the provision of consultant medical services to patients admitted onto the Stroke pathway. This includes thrombolysis, HASU ward rounds, ASU ward rounds and rehabilitation ward rounds. Upon commencement, you will agree a personalised job plan, including clinical commitments, as well as the supervision and teaching of junior doctors involved in the care of our patients.
Contributing towards the 7 days a week stroke consultant ward rounds to all of our hyper acute stroke patients. There is an on-call rota specifically for Stroke only, with a frequency of approximately 1 in 7 with prospective cover including thrombolysis. Compensatory time off during the week is factored into this rota.
Teaching responsibilities are shared with the stroke consultant colleagues and specialty trainees and consists of a repeating programme of lectures, seminars and tutorials. You may also participate in the teaching programme for the University of East Anglia (UEA) medical students and other clinical professionals involved with the Stroke pathway. You will be encouraged to participate in ongoing research studies.
All consultants, including the appointee, are involved in implementing the Trust’s Clinical Governance programme. This includes active participation in clinical audit, quality, clinical guidelines/pathways, professional development, appraisal and risk management.

Travelling to work
Staff parking is available onsite; however, this is limited during core working hours. We have more capacity in the evening and at weekends and can usually provide spaces during those hours.
We look to allocate these spaces fairly. Our Travel Office have a set of criteria that staff must meet in order to qualify. If you qualify for a space, you may be placed on a waiting list if we are at full capacity.
The NNUH is served by a number of public buses, and we offer generously discounted monthly passes with First Bus & Konect.
The Costessey Park and Ride runs regularly each day from 06:30 (from P&R) to 20:45 (from NNUH) and this service is free for NHS staff. There is a regular Thickthorn P&R service as well which is free. Applications to the Travel Office are required for this service. We also have a discounted service from the airport P&R if you purchase a bundle. Please see Konect website for further details.
The NNUH host multiple bicycle racks and a salary sacrifice scheme. We also benefit from a Beryl station onsite.
