The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides a full range of acute clinical services for a catchment area of up over 1 million people. Our patients are referred to us by around 100 local GP surgeries and other acute hospitals and primary care Trusts around the country. We are involved in the teaching and training of a wide range of health professionals, in partnership with the University of East Anglia and other local education providers.

Job overview
Due to a number of internal promotions, we are pleased to offer the ultimate new graduate role. We are recruiting for a Band 5 Dietitian to work at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. This is a permanent full-time post (1.0 WTE). This post is suitable for newly qualified Dietitians or Band 5 Dietitians looking for further experience. We also welcome applications from Dietetic Students in their final degree years.
In this role we aim to give you a solid knowledge base within Dietetics at one of the largest hospitals in the UK to set you on course for a successful career. You will be based within the Adult Acute Team. We see patients from a variety of specialties including gastroenterology and surgical, neurology and stroke, critical care, medicine for the elderly, oncology, renal, eating disorders and many more!

When you first arrive with us you will have a 4-week induction period where you will be slowly introduced to the clinical caseload. You will then be supported to take on your own patients within the Adult Acute Team. Alongside this you will be helped through our general Dietetic and enteral feeding competencies within the first 3 months of practice. You will also be involved in the day-to-day co-ordination and prioritisation of patient care, learning key skills for your future. Newly qualified Dietitians will also be enrolled on our preceptorship scheme which will further support your development in your first year of Dietetic practice.
On an ongoing basis your responsibilities will include:
- Day to day patient care
- Prioritisation and organisation of caseloads
- Research and audit
- CPD activities
- Mentoring & supervising Dietetic Assistants and Practitioners of the team including apprenticeship mentorship
- Supervision of Dietetic Students
- Involvement or leading projects to support departmental improvement
- Active involvement in team meetings and discussions
- Training for ward staff including nurses, HCA’s and junior doctors

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
We are a dynamic, outgoing and creative team made up from diverse professionals from around the world. We cover both adult and paediatric patients containing extensive specialties where you will be able to develop new skills and gain experience. We understand the importance of supporting people and appreciate that everyone has different needs with regards to their development. We will work with you to ensure that we offer the support which best complements your unique learning style.
- To provide a dietetic service to Medicine for the elderly wards, general medical and surgical wards, heart attack clinic and general outpatient clinic.
- To provide dietetic advice to patients and/or carers whilst taking into account their social, emotional, psychological and cultural needs.
- To provide nutritional assessment and dietetic intervention, on an individual basis, incorporating biochemical and pharmacological review, anthropometry, clinical condition and other physical parameters.
- To ensure appropriate treatment, monitoring and review of patient’s dietary needs, involving other agencies when indicated.
- To communicate effectively with the multidisciplinary team through attendance at ward rounds, case conferences, discharge planning meetings and team meetings as appropriate.
- To recommend to Doctors the prescription of nutritional supplements and enteral feeds for outpatients, and arrange monitoring.
- To prescribe nutritional supplements for inpatients within the specific guidelines agreed by the Trust.
- To be trained in the use of enteral feeding pumps and equipment, to be confident to advise nursing staff, patients and carers.

Travelling to work
Staff parking is available onsite; however, this is limited during core working hours. We have more capacity in the evening and at weekends and can usually provide spaces during those hours.
We look to allocate these spaces fairly. Our Travel Office have a set of criteria that staff must meet in order to qualify. If you qualify for a space, you may be placed on a waiting list if we are at full capacity.
The NNUH is served by a number of public buses, and we offer generously discounted monthly passes with First Bus & Konect.
The Costessey Park and Ride runs regularly each day from 06:30 (from P&R) to 20:45 (from NNUH) and this service is free for NHS staff. There is a regular Thickthorn P&R service as well which is free. Applications to the Travel Office are required for this service. We also have a discounted service from the airport P&R if you purchase a bundle. Please see Konect website for further details.
The NNUH host multiple bicycle racks and a salary sacrifice scheme. We also benefit from a Beryl station onsite.
