Job overview
We are delighted to advertise a Clinical Psychology role in the Palliative Care department at the Norfolk & Norwich University NHS Foundation Trust. The post-holder will independently run a psychology service to the multi-disciplinary palliative care team. The team have a long-standing relationship with Clinical Psychology, and they value the input which a Clinical Psychologist can provide.
You will join a small team of Clinical Psychologists working in the Trust, in both adult and paediatric specialities, and there are opportunities for peer supervision/ support in addition to joint working with psychologists based in other departments. You will be supervised by an experienced Clinical Psychologist within the Trust.

The Clinical Psychologist will be an integral member of the Palliative Care team consisting of Consultants, Nurses and community palliative care staff.
The psychology role will be focused on a mixture of outpatient and inpatient work, supporting patients and facilitating a psychologically-informed approach for the rest of the team. There is some capacity to shape this mix of outpatient and inpatient work, dependent on the clinical interests of the successful candidate. Some of the clinical contact may involve remote working, due to pressure on existing physical space.
The post-holder will need to plan appropriate data to collect, to evaluate and improve the service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To be responsible for providing a highly specialist systematic and autonomous clinical psychology service, within the specialist area, in accordance with objectives agreed with service and professional managers. The post will require independent management of caseload and the assessment, treatment and discharge of clients, within the bounds of the service operational policy. To provide a clinical service to other specialties, as agreed with the Service Manager for Clinical Psychology.
- To carry out specialist psychological assessments of clients referred to the service based upon the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of highly complex data from a variety of sources including psychological and neuropsychological tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others involved in the patient’s care to reach a psychological formulation of the client’s difficulties. The post will require manipulation of highly specialist equipment for neuropsychological and psychometric assessments of ability and performance. Assessments will also require the systematic observation, recording, analysis and interpretation of complex visual material.
- To formulate and implement plans for the formal psychological treatment and management for clients in the service and their families with accompanying psychological difficulties, including clients with highly complex clinical presentations and histories. Treatment to be based upon an appropriate conceptual framework and evidence-based methods.
- To be responsible for implementing a range of complex psychological interventions for individuals, carers, families and groups (where appropriate) within and across settings employed individually and systemically, adjusting and refining psychological formulations drawing upon different explanatory models and maintaining a number of provisional hypotheses.
- To provide specialist assessments of clients presenting with cognitive impairment due to a variety of causes or organic conditions, including pre-assessment counselling and neuropsychological and functional screening assessments, and to be able to adjust psychological interventions accordingly or to refer on to more appropriate services.
- To evaluate and make decisions about treatment options taking into account both theoretical and therapeutic models and highly complex factors concerning historical and developmental processes that have shaped the individual, family or group.
- To assess and evaluate information from the child, adult, family and significant others, multi-disciplinary medical team and external agencies relating to medical condition, developmental status and incorporate this information into a clinical formulation. Post will require intensive concentration during all patient and family contact, ranging from relatively brief contact to assessments lasting several hours.
- To exercise autonomous professional responsibility for the assessment, treatment and discharge of complex clients whose problems are primarily psychological and to autonomously manage an out-patient caseload in line with the service thresholds and priorities.
- To provide consultation, mentorship, supervision, debrief and advice about psychological issues at a high level of professional expertise to other members of the team/service and other professionals working with service users, through attendance at regular psychosocial meetings, multidisciplinary team meetings and ward rounds, and across a range of agencies/ settings as appropriate. To evaluate the impact of staff support methods and to advise management within the units on staff support needs and policies.
- To ensure that all members of the treating team have access to a psychologically based framework for understanding and care of clients of the service, through the provision of advice and consultation and the dissemination of psychological research and theory.

Travelling to work
Staff parking is available onsite; however, this is limited during core working hours. We have more capacity in the evening and at weekends and can usually provide spaces during those hours.
We look to allocate these spaces fairly. Our Travel Office have a set of criteria that staff must meet in order to qualify. If you qualify for a space, you may be placed on a waiting list if we are at full capacity.
The NNUH is served by a number of public buses, and we offer generously discounted monthly passes with First Bus & Konect.
The Costessey Park and Ride runs regularly each day from 06:30 (from P&R) to 20:45 (from NNUH) and this service is free for NHS staff. There is a regular Thickthorn P&R service as well which is free. Applications to the Travel Office are required for this service. We also have a discounted service from the airport P&R if you purchase a bundle. Please see Konect website for further details.
The NNUH host multiple bicycle racks and a salary sacrifice scheme. We also benefit from a Beryl station onsite.
