Job overview
We are looking to recruit innovative Nurses who are passionate about postnatal care and are dedicated to providing evidence based care.
We are a busy service which provides care for over 7,500 women and their families. Nurses have the opportunity to rotate between our postnatal ward and the maternity high dependency/ recovery ward.
Newly qualified nurses will participate in a 12 month preceptorship program designed by our team of Practice Development midwives/nurses.
The post is open to nurses who will have either current NMC registration and are working in the UK or to those training in the UK an due to qualify in the next 3 months..

The post-natal nurse is responsible for their own practice and therefore the post holder will be expected to maintain a high standard of professional expertise and to ensure that the highest standard of care is given to patients in their care.
Provide support and mentoring to less experienced practitioners, midwives, nurses and students to the required trust standards and competencies and to support colleagues in a multi-disciplinary team.
Take the leadership role in managing and organising obstetric patient’s pre and post regional and general anaesthesia.
Co-operate and liaise with all members of staff in the unit to endeavour to foster team spirit and ensure continuity of care.
Administer medications to women and babies.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
SCOPE & RANGE
To provide immediate individualised nursing care to women who have undergone operative procedures.
To create a safe environment for women, their partners, families and staff in the Recovery Area.
To assist midwifery staff in the delivery of care to women and neonates in the Postnatal Ward
Plans own workload on a day-to-day basis in liaison with the ward Coordinator
Acts as a mentor and participate in preceptorship programmes
Have good communication skills
Participate in audit.
MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
General Responsibilities
- Care for patients in the Recovery Area on the post-natal ward developing skills in airway pain management and post-operative monitoring and intervention.
- Assess, plan implement and evaluate care related to the individual needs of the woman.
- Assist on wards or clinical areas as required to ensure they are smooth-running.
- Act at all times in a reassuring and professional manner.
- Uphold and maintain the philosophy, standards, policies and procedures required by the Maternity Directorate and the Trust.
- Document the care given in the woman’s records and input data into the electronic record. Complete all necessary documentation, participating in the collection of relevant data for audit and efficiency monitoring.
- Participate in standard setting, quality assurance and developments.
- Maintain basic life support (BLS) skills.
- Provide care for women requiring high dependency care under the supervision of the Anaesthetist.
- Ensure mothers and carers are given appropriate information and provide opportunities for health education.
- Ensure that all resources are used effectively.
- Maintain appropriate stock levels and report discrepancies.
- Monitor women during blood transfusions and Iron infusions within the Maternity Department.
- At all times, maintain the goodwill and confidence of the general public, Trust employees and other professionals. Carry out all duties in a courteous and professional manner.
- Comply with the Code of Conduct appropriate to own professional registration.
- Work within the legislation of the Medicines Act (1968).
- Ensure own professional registration is maintained.
Health and Safety Responsibilities
- Ensure the environment is safe for women, babies, staff and visitors, before, during and after patient care.
- Cleaning, care and day-to-day maintenance of the environment and all equipment in general use in the Ward Area.
- Report to the Clinical Specialist any accidents, complaints or defects in drugs, supplies and equipment and complete Hospital Reporting Documentation.
- Act at all times to comply with the Health & Safety at Work Act, the Trust’s Health and Safety Policy and those policies which the Trust or Department requires.
Training Responsibilities
- Develop skills in all clinical areas through experience and education.
- Participate in in-service training and orientation programmes of newly appointed nurses, particularly regarding specialist nursing skills, BLS, recovery, and high-dependency care.
- Identify own learning needs and demonstrate continuing development. Participate in the Trust’s performance review programme.
- Attend relevant maternity training sessions, e.g. breast-feeding initiative.
- Develop and implement a problem-solving approach to difficulties in practice, working with the Clinical Specialist.
- Assist in facilitating training for students and midwives in recovery skills
- Be aware of current research findings and professional developments relevant to practice.
- Maintain a professional portfolio, where required by professional registration. Provide evidence of such a document at the request of the Managers.
- Participate in flexible working arrangements.
- Attend staff meetings, identifying needs and problems to be discussed with the senior midwife.
- Participate in equipment training programme.
- Participate in training and ensuring competencies of staff working in theatre and recovery
SYSTEMS & EQUIPMENT
- Train and become proficient in the use of all relevant hospital systems.
- Train and become proficient in the use of all equipment on the maternity wards.
- Ensure safe use, maintenance and storage of personal and ward equipment
DECISIONS & JUDGEMENTS
- Plans own workload on a day-to-day basis with the midwife in charge.
- Advise on Public Health issues, e.g. smoking cessation and breast feeding promotion
- Be aware of own development needs and take appropriate action
COMMUNICATIONS & RELATIONSHIPS
- Have well developed communications skills
- Liaise with staff, women, and their relatives in a sympathetic and sensitive manner.
- Co-operate and liaise with all members of staff, the primary health care team, the medical and midwifery staff in the unit to endeavour to foster team spirit and ensure continuity of care.
- Responsible for working in partnership with the woman and her family ensuring they are the primary focus of their practice.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB
A range of physical tasks related to direct patient care which can involve standing for long periods of time, walking, bending and lifting loads ensuring manual handling procedures are followed.
