Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, highly motivated, enthusiastic individual to join our Renal Care Group, on a fixed six-month secondment, as Haemodialysis Matron at the Main Dialysis Unit at Kings College Hospital.
We are looking for an experienced ward manager, established matron or equivalent, to join our team.
This role covers chronic and acute dialysis services at Denmark Hill, Dulwich Satellite unit at the Tessa Jowel Medical Centre and our Vascular Access service.
The post holder will be responsible and accountable for all aspects of patient care, staffing and resource use at the Denmark Hill Haemodialysis Unit ,Dulwich Satellite Unit and our Vascular Access Service.
As Matron you will be a highly visible member of the senior Nursing team, supported by the lead Nurse for dialysis and the Renal Head of Nursing.
You will work alongside the Senior Nursing team to provide leadership and ensure clinical excellence across a large and diverse care group. To apply for this post, you will demonstrate experience in a clinical leadership role with evidence of service improvement, workforce development, leading the delivery of safe, effective care and enhancing patient experience within a renal dialysis environment.
This is an excellent opportunity to play a key role alongside an ambitious clinical team. You will be competent at managing services across site, leading people and empowering teams to deliver excellent patient care, while continuing to deliver a culture of respects and compassion in a supportive environment. Significant recent experience of working in a both acute and chronic dialysis setting, with proven management and leadership skills is highly desirable for this role.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical
· To be a highly visible, accessible and approachable dialysis nurse expert with a significant direct patient care role within the DHHU, Dulwich Dialysis unit and Vascular Access Department.
· To be a highly visible, accessible and approachable leader to nursing staff, patients and the public so that open and honest communication channels are created.
· To provide professional guidance, support and leadership to all nursing staff within these departments, demonstrating a responsible attitude in order to promote confidence in the service.
· To be an effective role model and able to represent staff and Care Group organisationally and professionally.
· To be responsible and take a lead on nursing standards, ensuring that audits are undertaken, and action plans are developed which effectively improve patient outcome.

· To ensure that practice is evidence based, ensuring clinical guidelines are developed and implemented considering the scope of practice within the clinical areas.
Management and Leadership
· To take a lead in the investigation of all incidents and patient complaints within these units ensuring that timely action plans are developed and implemented whilst supporting the nursing staff, and feeding incident reports to the Dialysis Lead Nurse and Care Group governance structure
· To ensure that nursing staffing and sickness levels are carefully monitored and actioned in a timely and appropriate manner in conjunction with Trust HR department, reporting issues directly to the Lead Nurse.
· To act as a lead in the monitoring of clinical standards, including observations of care and patient satisfaction, especially when areas of concern are identified.
· To carry out quality rounds within these areas, facilitating communication with patients and staff, and observations of infection prevention control practices.
· To work in a supportive and collaborative manner with the Lead Nurse for Dialysis, Service and General Managers, Head of Nursing, Practice Development team and Senior Nurses in order to achieve the aims and objectives of the Trust.
· To ensure that nursing staff work to agreed competencies as set down in the competency framework within the Trust.
· To ensure that there is a system of Reflective Practice in place to provide support to all nursing staff as required.
· To provide appropriate and consistent professional advice to other Senior Members of the Care Group, Nursing and Management teams, acting as a point of contact at times of difficulty and when support is required.
· To work professionally with other health care professionals, ensuring that nursing roles within the Care Groups are clarified and there is an appreciation within the care group of the contribution made by the nursing staff.
· To oversee annual assessments of Health and Safety, Fire and Manual Handling ensuring that action plans are in place to address and reduce risk.
· To deputise for the Lead Nurse of Haemodialysis
Education
· To support the development of an educational environment by actively contributing to the development of HCA’s, Nurses, and others as appropriate.
· To contribute to the development of a quality learning environment for students and trained staff through the development of effective links with key education providers
· To support the renal Sisters/Charge Nurses to ensure that staff achieve the required level of agreed competency.
· To assist in the development of junior doctors
