London Ambulance Service covers an area of 620 sq. miles, serves one of the world’s most dynamic and diverse cities and is the busiest ambulance service in the UK. We handle over 1.9 million emergency calls from across the capital and attend more than 1.2 million incidents every single year as well as delivering a 24 hour NHS 111 Integrated Urgent Care Service in South East and North East London that we estimate will respond to around 1.4million urgent care calls by the end of the year.
We employ over 8,000 people who work or volunteer across London to respond to the health needs of over eight million people who live, work and travel in the capital. We work closely with our NHS partners and are commissioned by 32 clinical commissioning groups spread across 5 sustainability and transformation partnerships (STPs) and NHS England for our specialist services. We work alongside London’s hospital, mental health and specialist trusts, as well as the five STPs across Greater London.
In addition we work in partnership with the other emergency services, London’s Air Ambulance and London’s Resilience Forums to make sure we are ready and prepared to respond to major incidents and ensure we keep Londoners safe. As the only pan-London NHS provider we have a unique opportunity to play a leading role in integrating access to emergency and urgent care right across London.
By 2023 we will improve outcomes and experiences for all our patients by providing the right care to patients at the right time, and in the most cost effective way. This will mean up to 122,000 fewer patients being taken to emergency departments when their needs could be better met in a different way, and we will deliver significant efficiencies in avoided costs to the urgent and emergency care sector.
The London Ambulance Service is currently seeking a highly motivated Senior Infection Prevention and Control Practitioner to join their pro-active Infection Control Team.
This is an exciting opportunity to use your existing skills within IPC to make a difference to the quality of care and improve outcomes for patients using our services, whilst developing your skills and knowledge in the pre-hospital environment.

The post holder will have a pivotal highly specialised role providing a comprehensive Infection Prevention and Control Service for LAS; ensuring that the Trust’s commitment to reducing healthcare associated infections is adhered to through provision of safe, quality care to patients and ensuring the well-being of its staff.
The candidate for this post will have significant experience within an Infection Prevention & Control setting and hold a recognised IPC qualification. This senior role entails providing support with projects to ensure the annual work programme is delivered and deputising for the Lead IPC Practitioner where necessary. They will inspire and motivate others and, act as a role model and a professional source of advice for staff and external colleagues when required. They will feature a visible IPC presence and good role modelling, to ensure that IPC remain high on the agenda in the Trust and support the work of the IPC committee.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Key responsibilities of the include to:
- Oversee delivery of a comprehensive service through the IPC annual work plan, providing efficient highly specialized IPC support to all services within LAS, patients, visitors, and non-trust staff working within the organisation.
- Develop and deliver training packages, enhance/develop relevant policies/procedures, and prepare information pitched at the correct level for upload onto the intranet page (Pulse).
- Lead the IPC Champion network, providing training with on-going support and engagement; contribute to the learning experiences and development of local IPC Champions
- Verify, analyse and synthesise assurance data from audit programmes; ensure robustness of data received through a planned programme of validation audits of stations, cleanliness standards, observational audits of IPC practice to provide internal performance assurance to the trust
- Provide complex reports regarding specific areas of responsibility, contribute to the annual report training packages, enhance/ develop policies/procedures, and prepare information pitched at the correct level to upload to the Pulse
- Assertively and professionally challenge inappropriate care, behaviour or practice, escalating concerns when indicated, using a range of communication skills and trust systems.

In addition to the basic salary for all Agenda for Change posts, London Ambulance Service NHS Trust in line with the NHS Agenda for Change provides 15% or 20% High Cost Area Supplement (HCAS) dependant on the location of your role. The supplement is subject to minimum and maximum payment.
High Cost Area Supplement (HCAS) for part time employee will be based on the part time salary.

Qualifications, Accreditations, Education
- Master’s degree in healthcare related subject or equivalent experience
- Significant experience of working as a registered nurse, paramedic, or allied healthcare professional
- A recognised Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) qualification degree, diploma or significant equivalent experience
- Teaching qualification and experience of teaching
- Post-graduate qualification
