Job overview
An Exciting opportunity has become available in the Breast Imaging department for a Specialist Radiographer / Mammographer / trainee Mammographer to join our team.
Our friendly and progressive Norwich Breast Unit is part of the QSI Accredited Imaging Department at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and has a lot to offer an enthusiastic Mammographer. We aim to always be at the forefront of developments.
The department provides a full symptomatic and breast screening service, with symptomatic and assessments based in a state-of-the-art hospital, on the outskirts of the city. The department has 2 mammography rooms equipped with Full Field Digital (FFD) technology including Tomosynthesis and Contrast Enhanced Spectral Mammography CESM), and 3 ultrasound rooms. A designated FFD room for stereotactic guided biopsies able to produce 3D biopsy imaging. A Faxitron machine allows for immediate core biopsy imaging at the time of biopsy.
The hospital has a fully integrated RIS and PACS system.
Breast screening is based nearer to the city centre at the Norwich Community Hospital in a static unit accommodating 2 Mammography rooms. In addition, there is a static screening unit at the Cromer District Hospital. The screening unit also has 2 mobile screening vans that cover all of picturesque rural Norfolk including many seaside locations. All equipment is full field digital technology. We work at a pleasant pace so we can make the women’s experience as caring as possible.
Advert
As post holder you will provide a professional, high quality mammographic imaging service. You will work in both the symptomatic service and NHS Breast Screening Programme, producing mammograms of the highest standard. The post holder will practice for the majority of the time, unsupervised and often supervising Assistant practitioners, trainee Mammographers and trainee Mammography Associates.
Although full or part time posts are available full working days are a requirement.
It is essential that the candidates must hold a clean driving licence.
Mammography posts have a gendered protected character, due to the nature of the work. This is an occupational requirement and therefore only female applicants should apply.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To work unsupervised and, when required, in a supervisory capacity with an Assistant Practitioner in either a mobile or static screening clinic. Responsible for the smooth running of the clinic, keeping within tight time restraints for the imaging of each woman.
- To document clinical observations and use own judgement to clinically recall women to assessment.
- To recognise abnormalities on Mammography and seek advice from Radiologist regarding further imaging when appropriate.
- Daily communication with women who need reassurance due to anxiety about the screening process, recall or their condition, necessary to obtain their confidence, consent, and co-operation to acquire diagnostic images.
- To image both fresh and formalin fixed breast specimens as and when required, taking care to note orientation, to assist the Radiologist with the report.
- To take delegated responsibility for legislation pertaining to Health & Safety, Ionising Radiation Regulations and procedures for ceasing screening when equipment fails to perform to quality and safety standards, or woman withdraws consent.
- To be based at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, but to travel to the screening units as and when required. A full clean driving licence is required. Any points, fines or convictions must be notified to the Superintendent Radiographer immediately.
- To take all necessary precautions to prevent the occurrence of accidents, but in the event of such ensure that the required documentation is completed.
- Report any defects or breakage of equipment to the Superintendent immediately.
- To be aware of the quality assurance guidelines and know when to take remedial action.

Travelling to work
Staff parking is available onsite; however, this is limited during core working hours. We have more capacity in the evening and at weekends and can usually provide spaces during those hours.
We look to allocate these spaces fairly. Our Travel Office have a set of criteria that staff must meet in order to qualify. If you qualify for a space, you may be placed on a waiting list if we are at full capacity.
The NNUH is served by a number of public buses, and we offer generously discounted monthly passes with First Bus & Konect.
The Costessey Park and Ride runs regularly each day from 06:30 (from P&R) to 20:45 (from NNUH) and this service is free for NHS staff. There is a regular Thickthorn P&R service as well which is free. Applications to the Travel Office are required for this service. We also have a discounted service from the airport P&R if you purchase a bundle. Please see Konect website for further details.
The NNUH host multiple bicycle racks and a salary sacrifice scheme. We also benefit from a Beryl station onsite.
