Job overview
Consultant in General Medicine with interest in Gastroenterology
Glangwili General Hospital, Carmarthenshire
37.5 hours / 10 sessions per week
It is anticipated that the appointment of a sixth gastroenterology physician into the Carmarthenshire team will allow subspecialisation and concentration of expertise within the County.
The post will be based at the Glangwili site and General Medical responsibilities will be based there on a ward based 1:20 system.
It is anticipated the successful applicant would have a broad ability in general gastroenterology to join 5 colleagues in Carmarthenshire. An interest in either Bowel Screening Endoscopy and advanced lower GI therapy or an interest in ERCP and hepatology would be warmly welcomed. Bowel Screening Wales expansion through national optimisation is creating a large demand for screening endoscopists currently and over the next 3 years.
We have a hepatology service which is flourishing and growing. The service needs additional senior medical input to guide specialist hepatology nurses.
ERCP experience would be highly desirable to enable succession planning of current services that includes 2 ERCP lists.
Most of these sessions will be delivered at Glangwili hospital but future growth of lists may require travel to Prince Phillip or Bronglais Hospitals depending on specialist interest.
An interest in advanced colonoscopy, hepatology and ERCP will we nurtured and mentored with the existing team to develop skills and confidence.

General medical on call commitments is (optional) 1 in 20 weekends and no weekday post take ward rounds thanks to a team of acute physicians. This minimises the disruption to specialist work. One gastroenterology ward at 18 beds will be shared with a colleague and with haematologists. GI bleed on call is 1 in 8 currently and may become 1 in 9 following this appointment. The Health Board is committed to develop gastroenterology to match the strong services in acute medicine, cardiology and respiratory medicine.
