Islington Council offers a wide range of high-quality apprenticeships. Our apprenticeships combine working in a great job, with training, development, and a competitive salary. You will be given dedicated time in your working week to focus on your studies. You will also have access to a network of colleagues from within the organisation and tutors to support your learning.
The Lift and Escalator Electromechanic apprenticeship consists of a 3.5 years opportunity to learn and to provide support to the Mechanical & Engineering team. You will work with the team to ensure our lifts in our residential buildings are in good working order. You will gain an understanding of the work of the team and will work in a supported learning environment whilst working towards a nationally recognised Level 3 Apprenticeship.
To apply for this apprenticeship, you must:
- Be aged 16 or above and
- Be an Islington resident or
- Islington care leaver or
- Islington school leaver in the last 12 months .
You will also need to satisfy the following course entry requirements:
- Not already have a qualification at the similar level or above in this apprenticeship subject
- Not have extensive skills or experience in this apprenticeship subject.
- Pass the course entry tests including Maths and English & visual pattern awareness.
- Provide evidence of 3 x GSCEs (A-C / 9-4) or Level 2 equivalent including English, Maths and a STEM subject (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths

The Job - Working as a Lift and Escalator Electromechanic apprentice for the Council you will:
- Check the lift mechanics, controls, and safety systems
- Undertake routine checks on lifts in residential properties.
- Carry out repairs on lifts under direction.
- Record actions and decisions on IT systems.
- Work according to strict Health & Safety guidelines.
- Use various software to carry duties including Word, Excel, and any other software necessary. Training will be provided
Training and Development – As part of your role you will:
- Complete a Level 3 Lift and Escalator Electromechanic apprenticeship.
- Participate in the Councils apprenticeship network and various development activities.
- Have access to a buddy/mentor

After you have successfully completed your apprenticeship, you will have gained valuable workplace experience and attained your Level 3 qualification. This will improve your chances of finding work within the Council, with other employers or help you move on to a higher-level position within the council as a Lift Inspector which will include further training

You will be required to demonstrate your potential across key areas. Please answer the questions below with as much detail as possible on your application. Key areas include
Undertake a development programme leading to a Level 3 Lift & Escalator Electromechanic Apprenticeship.
Use the dedicated time given to complete studies and coursework.
Actively participate in your own development. This includes carrying out duties of your role and completing coursework within agreed deadlines.
With supervision to develop skills and experience in:
- Health & Safety & Environment – working safely to industry specific standards following risk assessment procedures
- Lift technology – work with the complex parts and processes involved in the working of lifts
- Electrical and electronic systems - operating complex lift systems, interpreting electrical wiring diagrams
- Planning & organising work – following safe working practices when planning, storing, and moving lift components.
- Service and repair lifts – checking lift hydraulic systems, positioning systems, inspection of lift equipment, diagnosing faults.
- Team working and effective communication - ensure safety of yourself and colleagues, seek guidance where required.
Support the team to repair and service lifts within Islington properties.
Constructively take part in meetings, supervision, seminars, and other events designed to improve communication.
Use information technology systems to carry out duties in the most efficient and effective manner.
Achieve personal performance targets, as agreed by your line manager.
Carry out duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Council’s customer care standards.
Be committed to the Council’s ambitions and CARE values (see above).
Undertake other duties compatible with your learning and development as required.
