We currently have full time and part time positions available for a band 6 Deputy Sister/Charge Nurse. The successful candidate will be able to work well within the team and be willing to work a mixed shift pattern, including days and nights across the whole week. They will be a self-motivated and enthusiastic individual with excellent clinical and communication skills, with an ability to lead and motivate others. They will also enjoy teaching and supporting junior staff as well as pre and post registration students.

JOB SUMMARY
- To provide clinical leadership ensuring a high standard of individualised nursing and family centred care is delivered to critically ill children.
- To work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team, communicating effectively with all levels of medical and nursing staff.
- To uphold the critical care Unit’s Nursing Philosophy of Care.
CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Act as a clinical leader and role model for all members of the nursing team.
- Work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team, recognising the contribution of all members of staff.
- Anticipate needs and provide support for junior members of staff.
- Ensure high standards of nursing care are maintained reflecting all aspects of the critical care unit philosophy of care.
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualised care for a designated group of children and their parents.
- Act as an advocate, upholding the best interests of the child and family.
- Encourage practice which develops partnership with parents and maximises their contribution to the care of their children.
- Be responsible with medical staff for information giving, breaking sensitive/bad news to families.
- Organise and undertake all forms of safe transfer of children to and from the critical care unit.
- Co-ordinate the care of the child and families with other members of the health care team across the service.
- Contribute to and take a lead role in initiating agreed changes within the unit.
- Contribute to Quality Assurance Initiatives within the unit.
- Develop an area of expertise in clinical practice and act as a resource for members of the nursing team.
EDUCATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Act as a mentor working with students and staff in a way that is supportive and that facilitates reflective learning towards effective practice.
- Contribute on a frequent basis to the teaching programme for all new nursing staff in the unit.
- Act as a preceptor for new members of staff.
PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain own professional development to ensure that all nursing practice is based on current knowledge and relevant research.
- Uphold the NMC code of practice and be aware of the implications of the scope of practice.
- Promote clinical supervision and reflective practice for self and members of the nursing team.
MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Take responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Unit in the absence of a Sister/Charge Nurse.
- Ensure staff make effective use of resources within the unit.
- Co-ordinate the admission/discharge or transfer of children with other members of the health care team to promote seamless care.
- Attend Unit Meetings as appropriate, ensuring effective communication is maintained within the team.
- Contribute to and take a lead role in unit initiatives.
- Be responsible for supporting/supervising a small team of staff with the support of the Sister; undertake appraisals (with appropriate training).
- Support the Ward Sister by taking on additional responsibilities as required, such as absence management, managing day-to-day staffing and rota, and leading on specific projects/areas of interest.
