Job overview
You will provide senior leadership and senior technical input to the subject group areas within the Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre (CDSC), Public Health Wales, in particular the Gastrointestinal, Zoonotic and Emerging Infection (GEZI) specialty group.
The key elements of the work of the CDSC are:
- Strategic leadership of the surveillance of infectious disease and health effects from exposure to environmental hazards;
- Providing a field epidemiology service for the investigation of outbreaks and incidents in the community or healthcare settings;
- Provision of data, evidence and policy guidance in support of programmes/priority areas as required;
- Two-way collaborative support for Health Protection teams; information and advice to support and guide HPT work, including surveillance and case management, regular CDSC and UK teleconferences;
- Providing scientific advice and support to other public health and NHS staff, including Directors of Public Health, on health protection issues;
- Providing scientific and policy advice and support to Welsh Government, local authority Directors of Public Protection, and other professional colleagues on health protection;
- Promotion of professional standards including training, research and audit, including leading and delivering training, and supervision of registrars and field epidemiology fellows.

The post-holder will provide senior leadership and senior technical input to the surveillance and control of communicable diseases within the Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre (CDSC), Public Health Wales, in particular the Gastrointestinal, Zoonotic and Emerging Infection (GEZI) specialty group. The post-holder will support the development, maintenance and evaluation of surveillance systems at national level and provide leadership for the development of outputs to meet needs of local and national stakeholders within the health system and beyond.
The post-holder will ensure the continuous analysis of surveillance data to monitor local patterns of disease and to identify clusters, outbreaks and trends, and will design, develop and utilise information and intelligence systems, including data science methods, to underpin public health improvement and action on communicable diseases and environmental hazards throughout Wales

The salary scale shown is for a full-time member of staff, with the amount being adjusted pro rata for those working less than 37.5 hours per week.
In general, anyone joining our Trust who has not previously worked in the NHS will, by default, start on the first point of the advertised pay band. Pay progression will then be determined by annual Performance and Development Reviews in accordance with the NHS Wales Pay Progression Policy. - • MSc or PhD in epidemiology, pharmaco-epidemiology or biostatistics/public health (with focus on epidemiology/observational research)

- • Experience of surveillance of infectious diseases
- • Demonstrated track record of developing and executing epidemiological or outcomes research projects, with publications and presentations
- • Demonstrated experience with managing project scope and driving delivery in an evolving environment requiring proactivity and effective problem-solving and prioritization when faced with challenges
- • Substantial experience working at a senior level involving scientific/research work / surveillance / data analysis.
- • Substantial direct experience of working with diverse senior professional groups across a range of organisations and professional disciplines
- • Experience in taking a lead role for specific areas of work e.g. project management
