We welcome analysts from all backgrounds to share their expertise; while prior involvement in local government or children's services is advantageous, it is not a prerequisite. As a member of our dynamic data and analytical service, you'll provide invaluable support to managers across Islington Council’s Children and Young People directorate. Successful candidates will lead on either 14-19 participation in Education, Employment and Training (EET) or children's social care data.

Working for our organisation
London Borough of Islington have brought in a ‘FutureWork’ programme, which includes a model of working that can be adapted for different roles. Each role is classified as one of four work styles. The Business Intelligence Analyst role is classified as a desk-based worker. This means the role will be mainly working from home but will be expected to work in the office on average one day a week.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The postholder will be part of a dynamic data and analytical service supporting managers and staff across Islington Council’s Children and Young People directorate.
The postholder will take the lead for providing specialist analytical support for at least one area within Children and Young People – this could be part of Children’s Social Care, the Youth Justice Service, Early Help, Youth and Play and / or 14 – 19 Progress. The postholder will also be expected to provide support for other areas where they are not the lead, on occasion, as required.
With minimal supervision the Business Intelligence Analyst will deliver high quality data and analytics using extensive knowledge of public sector data and business processes, and excellent analytical and technical skills.
The postholder will collate, model, analyse and interpret data from a range of systems and sources across the Islington council and its partners. They will deliver extensive business intelligence and data services, including performance reports, dashboards, statutory reporting and in-depth analysis.
The postholder will project plan and deliver the collection and analysis of data required for statutory returns / assessments and support good inspection outcomes for local authority services through the provision of timely data and accurate performance information.
The postholder will support the development of strategic and departmental policy, contributing to lasting improvements in the quality of services through the provision of high quality data and professional advisory services.

Essential criteria
- Able to communicate effectively across organisational boundaries, build partnerships with senior leaders and partners, such as Heads of Service within Children’s Services, or headteachers in Islington schools.
- Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills. You can influence and persuade individuals.
- Ability to specify, manipulate and analyse large datasets to provide meaningful insights.
- Excellent reasoning and analytical skills in order to make sound and considered recommendations. Able to work with complex concepts and ideas.
- Experience of writing reports and presentations about complex data analysis, presenting findings in concise and accessible format.
- Knowledge and understanding of the information requirements of Children’s services.
- Understands the role of data integrity and quality assurance processes in data management.
- Excellent project management skills, including an understanding of project management methods and an ability to use these to support the delivery of a programme of work, managing competing priorities and tight deadlines to deliver outputs to time, budget and quality requirements.
- Is ambitious and motivated, able to inspire others, work collaboratively and deliver outstanding results.
- Displays an awareness, understanding and commitment to the protection and safeguarding of children and young people and or vulnerable adults.
- Understands the role of information governance and data security best practice, rules and regulations.

- Experience of monitoring performance improvement across services
- Experience of developing performance management systems in a large organisation
- Experience working on the information requirements of a children’s service, including the regulatory framework for national assessments, standards and accountability; as well as statutory returns.
- Experience of leading the provision of analytical support to one or more areas within Children’s Services, e.g. Children’s Social Care, Youth Justice, Early Help or Education.
- Experience of applying statistical knowledge and skills to data in an organisation.
- Experience of delivering training, support and expert advice to a varied audience including external partners.
- Experience of producing reporting from children’s services management information systems (such as IYSS, LCS, etc).
- Extensive experience in using data management tools (e.g. MS Excel, MS Power BI, QGIS/mapping, Crystal SAP, MS Report Builder, R, Python, etc) and methods (e.g. writing formulae, queries and scripts, using PivotTables, creating dashboards, etc).
