Guy’s and St Thomas’ is among the UK’s busiest and most successful NHS foundation trusts. Guy’s is home to the largest dental school in Europe and a £160 million Cancer Centre opened in 2016. As part of our commitment to provide care closer to home, in 2017 we also opened a cancer centre and a kidney treatment centre at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup. St Thomas’ has one of the largest critical care units in the UK and one of the busiest emergency departments in London. It is also home to Evelina London Children’s Hospital.
Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions.
Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.
In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. Our merger provides a once in a generation opportunity to build a lasting, world-renowned heart and lung centre, providing the highest quality care for patients and conducting world-leading research.

Job overview
In February 2021, Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Hospitals merged to become part of Guys and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust to combine expertise to provide world class care to adults and children with heart and lung disease. This merger provides a “once in a generation opportunity” to build a world renowned heart and lung centre to provide the best clinical care, innovative treatments and cutting edge research.
This role is based in the busy respiratory medicine team. It involves assisting the physio / occupational therapy staff in the day to day running of the service and the management of the equipment, as well as working with patients to improve their mobility and exercise capacity. The post-holder will have some experience of working in health / social care and be interested in expanding/ progressing their skills. They will have good interpersonal skills and enjoy working as part of a team. They will also have good IT skills to ensure accurate records are kept of equipment in stock and issued.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Patient/customer care (both direct and indirect)
- To provide administrative support to the adult lung therapy team
- To tidy the main allocated therapy areas
- To answer the telephone, deal with telephone enquiries / appointment requests from staff; patients and carers; and check answer phone messages
- To photocopy and email documents
- To collect and distribute the therapy post
- To produce posters, cleaning instructions and leaflets for patient and staff information
- To clean and service compressors for patients to use at home and / or on holiday
- To provide and teach the use of respiratory equipment as required through established protocol for patients/carers to use at home
- To monitor stock level of available ‘’medications’’ and the temperature of the medicine cupboard in the adult lung therapy team and request replacement stock from pharmacy.
- To assist in pulmonary rehabilitation/ inpatient exercise classes under supervision of a physiotherapist/occupational therapist
- To mobilise patients at the request of a physiotherapist/occupational therapist and record as required in the physiotherapy/patient notes
- To carry out exercise programmes for adult or paediatric patients as requested by a physiotherapist/occupational therapist who may be in the same area or a phone call away
- To help with exercise programmes for in patient children as instructed by a physiotherapist/occupational therapist e.g on weekends
- To assist with mobility and transfer practice under supervision of physiotherapists and occupational therapists
- To work with occupational therapists and other health professionals in the treatment of in- patients (adults and children)
- To assess a patient on stairs as requested by a physiotherapist/occupational therapist or senior nurse
- To assess and teach a patient to use a walking aid e.g. a walking stick or frame
- To attend and participate in department in-service training when appropriate
- To take part in the appraisal system as an appraisee taking responsibility for helping to develop and fulfil agreed objectives
- Follow appropriate infection control Trust guidelines
- To be an active member of the respiratory physiotherapy weekend overtime rota in all areas (adult heart, paediatrics, adult respiratory) once completed weekend competencies.
- Carry out physiotherapy treatments without direct supervision at the weekend as specified by the qualified physiotherapist.
- To be able to use basic assessment skills and good communication skills to monitor and feedback relevant information to the qualified physiotherapist and MDT (about the assessment and treatment at a weekend), and recognise when treatment may not be appropriate.
- Maintain associated detailed weekend medical records.
- To keep a record of activity on RATAR/ Epic.
Policy development
- To abide by the R&T Division and Trust policies and protocols.
Service development
- To suggest possible improvements and implement changes relevant to scope
of work.
- To participate in occupational therapy/physiotherapy research and audits with supervision of the relevant line manager
People management
- To train new staff; in the cleaning/servicing of compressors and relevant equipment
- To educate occupational therapists and nurses in the use of compressors and other appropriate equipment
Communication
- To work effectively as a team member
- To answer the telephone and deal with telephone enquiries from staff, patients and carers, dealing sensitively with those who have high levels of anxiety and aggression or other barriers to communication. This will involve dealing with those who are unwell as well as the bereaved.
- To take and pass on messages to staff
- To talk to the Administrative assistants re stationery and referrals
- To contact Clinical engineering and/or the hospital sterilising service regarding the readiness / cleanliness of equipment. To ensure that annual servicing of all relevant therapy equipment is up to date, for example wheelchair servicing and the Quest standing frame servicing
Resource management
- To arrange for collection/delivery of compressors and other equipment in the
community - To restock the wards with respiratory equipment from the physiotherapy department
- To carry out monthly stock take and report to the Therapy Lead regarding equipment levels.
- To place orders for equipment via the finance cloud system with guidance from the relevant band 7/ therapy lead/ SM/ DGM
- To test equipment returned from Biomedical Engineering
- To provide cover for the Oxygen Therapy Technician in their absence at an appropriate level to this banding e.g. telephone communication, supporting clinicians with onward community referrals and patient queries.
- To maintain records showing location of equipment in home or hospital settings
- To contact Companies that provide equipment and to arrange deliveries
- To send and check equipment to Sydney street or Harefield.
- Information management
- To use PAS/EPR/ Epic to identify patients
- To use word processing facilities to produce typed letters, stock orders, and any similar items
- To use computer programmes to prepare and update spreadsheets etc
- To maintain the compressor database on Infoflex/ MS forms
- To use RATAR the therapy statistics programme
