Job overview
We are seeking a proactive, motivated, enthusiastic and experienced Point of Care Testing Co-ordinator to work across three sites, Royal Brompton Hospital, Wimpole Street in Central London, and Harefield Hospital in Uxbridge. The successful candidate would be expected to hold HCPC Registration. You will join a small team of two, joining into a larger POCT team. Our Team is dynamic and agile with two days rarely being the same working Monday to Friday 09:00 to 17:00 managing 185 devices.
At Synnovis, we are currently shaping the future of pathology services by creating a world-leading Hub and Spoke pathology network with our NHS partners. A large part of this modernisation will involve moving 70% of our services to a purpose built, state of the art Hub laboratory in the heart of London. For now, the job you are applying for will be based at one of our hospital sites however, from 1 April 2024 our people and services will start to move to our Hub laboratory in Blackfriars, Southwark, SE1, with some work remaining in refurbished essential services laboratories across our hospital network, focusing on the rapid turnover of urgent tests.
Working in partnership with our service partners, Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospitals, King’s College Hospital and Princess Royal University Hospital we aim to set the standard for the future of pathology.
This is a fixed term post for 12 months
Advert
- Ensure that all POCT activities in the Royal Brompton Hospital (RBH) & Harefield Hospital (HH) sites are performed safely, effectively and efficiently in accordance with all relevant Organisational policies and professional and regulatory standards
- Be responsible for provision of training and competency assessment for all staff who use POCT equipment, compliance monitoring, record keeping and reporting of all POCT devices within Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Foundation Trust (RBHT).
- Promote the continuous improvement in service delivery and quality within all areas of POCT, using modern methods to lead in the delivery of service, working closely with clinical staff throughout RB&H.

Synnovis is a pathology partnership between SYNLAB UK and Ireland, and the NHS, including sites, Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, to deliver and transform pathology services across South East London.
The partnership provides services to 1.7 million people living in South East London, as well as to hundreds of thousands of patients from outside the region who use local healthcare services.
The partnership provides diagnostics, testing and digital pathology for hospital trusts, GP services and other healthcare providers.
The Royal Brompton Hospital
Royal Brompton Hospital has a formidable international reputation for its treatment of lung and heart disease, built over more than 175 years.
It has ranked in the top ten 'World's Best Specialized Hospitals' ever since Newsweek created the list in 2021. It is home to Europe's largest centre for the treatment and management of cystic fibrosis, and also sees patients suffering from asthma and chronic lung conditions.
Harefield Hospital
Based in Uxbridge, North West London, The hospital is one of the largest and most experienced centres in the world for heart and lung transplants. It has jointly pioneered work in the development of ‘artificial hearts’ (also known as left ventricular assist devices or LVADs).

Essential criteria
- HCPC Registration
- MSc, FIBMS or equivalent in relevant discipline or demonstrable extensive relevant experience post HCPC registration in POCT
Desirable criteria
- Management training
- POCT qualification
Experience
Essential criteria
- Demonstrable Clinical Haematology or Clinical Biochemistry laboratory professional experience.
- Previous experience in POCT
- In depth knowledge of complex laboratory instrumentation
- Detailed understanding of quality control, quality assurance systems, clinical governance, accreditation and regulatory requirement, and Health and Safety Regulations
- Troubleshooting analytical and technical problems
- Knowledge of all aspects of specialist subject
- Use of Pathology computer systems
- Knowledge and understanding of the personal development staff appraisal process.
- Evidence of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and demonstrable commitment to ongoing CPD
Desirable criteria
- Previous experience in a large busy pathology laboratory
- Extensive experience as a POCT Coordinator
Skills and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Practical analytical skills associated with diagnostic laboratory
- Strong IT skills- Highly skilled and competent in use of Microsoft Office & Microsoft Excel Methodical approach to problem solving
- Ability to write service review reports
- Prepared to work with biological materials
- Ability to work under pressure in acute clinical situations and to make professional judgements that will protect the safety of patients
