Are you a hospital pharmacist who wants to experience new challenges, a recently qualified pharmacist looking for that all important first post in secondary care or a community pharmacist who would like to experience hospital pharmacy in a supportive and friendly environment, then this is the post and Trust for you.
An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and patient-focused pharmacist to join our established hospital pharmacy service at Liverpool Women's Hospital. You will be given expert training in Neonates (critical care), Maternity, Gynaecology and Fertility to enable you to cover these clinical areas independently.
The department also works very closely with the pharmacy services at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Alder Hey Children's Hospital and there will be opportunities for you to undertake rotations at these teaching Trusts in order to gain a wider clinical experience and expand your knowledge base.

As part of the pharmacy team and wider multidisciplinary team, you will assist in delivering and developing a high-quality clinical service to both inpatients and outpatients, ensuring that we provide the women and families using our services with the highest standards of care.
Our NHS 2022 Staff Survey results were recently published for the Pharmacy team and it showed staff were satisfied with their opportunities for flexible working patterns and we are committed to helping staff to balance their work and home life. The results also showed that team leaders take a positive interest in staff health and well-being. Flexible working requests would be considered to ensure your work-life balance is enhanced.
We encourage our team members to develop and progress their careers so we can offer funded places on the Clinical Pharmacy for Secondary and Tertiary Care course at LJMU (PgCert, PgDip, MSc). We can also offer other research and development opportunities and your designated mentor will guide and lead you through your development as a rotational pharmacist.

To co-operate fully in the provision of a comprehensive, safe and cost effective pharmaceutical service to the Trust and its patients.
To participate and assist in the development of a proactive, clinically orientated pharmacy service.
To be responsible for the provision and development of a clinical pharmacy service to a specific clinical speciality or patient group as agreed with the Deputy Chief Pharmacist. This will include;
- Taking drug histories on admission
- Reviewing medication to ensure safe and effective use
- Formulation of individual pharmaceutical care plans
- Review and update of care plans depending on response, results of investigations and adverse effects.
- Therapeutic drug monitoring for specific drugs
- Education of patients about their drug therapy
- Participation in consultant ward rounds
- Develop evidence based treatment protocols for use either within the directorate or across the Trust where appropriate
- Facilitate implementation of local and national guidelines where appropriate.
- Challenging inappropriate prescribing
- To assist the medical staff in the undertaking of such clinical trials as has been approved by the Ethical Committee and to arrange under the direction of senior members of staff of the Pharmaceutical Department, the necessary supplies and aspects of trial protocol affecting the pharmaceutical services.
To deliver clinical & where appropriate, final dispensing checks within the systems for dispensing & issuing medication from the pharmacy, in accordance with the prevailing safe systems of work.
To participate in, and supervise technical staff in, patient counselling to outpatient, inpatients and day case patients.
To provide counselling and information about the use of medicines to all grades of healthcare staff and patients
To provide Medicines Information services to other members of the health care team, under the supervision of the designated Medicines Information pharmacist.
To undertake where appropriate, post graduate qualifications in clinical pharmacy. To participate in the Trust’s incident reporting and Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) Reporting Schemes, in accordance with other local and national initiatives/schemes and the requirements of Clinical Governance.
To actively participate in risk assessment both clinical and corporate.
To promote and implement the Trust’s Prescribing Guidelines and policies, in order to ensure the safe and cost effective use of medicines throughout the Trust and the Primary/Secondary Care interface.
To liaise with medical and nursing staff and advise on matters relating to drug usage.
To co-operate with objective setting, individual personal assessment and continuing education and training programmes, in order to ensure continuing professional development and competence to practice as required by clinical governance.
To provide and participate in education and training programmes for Pharmacy staff, other health care staff and patients. (This may include a role in undergraduate and post-graduate courses by agreement.)
To act as a mentor to pre-registration pharmacists, when appropriate.
To prepare and submit at least one (joint) publication annually to reflect the innovative and successful work of the Pharmacy Directorate.
To participate in clinical audit and practice research as instructed by senior pharmacists within the department.
Together with other members of staff to ensure that work is carried out in accordance with current departmental procedures and legislation / regulations in respect of the Health & Safety at Work Act, COSHH and other pertinent recommendations are complied with.
To respond positively and in a timely way to those changes that may occur and affect the nature, direction and delivery of pharmacy services.
To participate in on call, out-of-hours, weekend and Bank and Statutory Holiday working, in keeping with the Pharmacy Directorate arrangements on all Trust sites.
To ensure that security is maintained at all times, including that relating to computer systems.
To ensure that total confidentiality with regard to the business of the Trust is upheld at all times.
To undertake any other reasonable duties that may be required.
To become conversant with the LWH Trust’s Meditech integrated computer database in Pharmacy, Electronic Prescribing (EP) and Pharmacy Materials Management modules of the system.
To participate in the training of medical and nursing staff on relevant aspects of the Meditech EP module.
To update, maintain and assist in the development of computer systems
The post-holder must comply with all Trust policies and procedures and attend all necessary mandatory training.
