Job overview
This is an exciting opportunity to join a busy and flourishing department in psychological medicine in UCLH paediatric and adolescent division. This post is a new and exciting role for our department. It is a response to the increasing need to offer specialist support for our patients with ASC and/or Learning disability while an inpatient or outpatient in our services. The post holder will have the important task of working across a number of different settings and contexts with the specific aim of supporting our young people with an individual package of care that takes full account of the challenges that their neurodiversity presents in conjunction with their physical health needs. The post holder will need to feel confident and energetic to work with many different areas in UCLH. They will need to be able draw on their expertise of LD and ASC to provide appropriate training and consultation for staff working directly with young people and their families.
Advert
The main duties of this role will be:
- To offer bespoke and specialist additional input to support young people with ASC and LD while attending UCLH for treatment for a physical health condition.
- To offer training and consultation to wards and outpatient departments to improve access and responsiveness to young people with ASC/LD.
- To work alongside nursing, play specialists and psychological medicine clinicians to provide a joined up and effective approach to meet the needs of all young people with ASC and LD in UCLH.
- To offer individual input where deemed necessary
- To offer staff consultation and support
- To provide urgent support when required in the emergency department and on the wards for children and young people.

The psychological medicine department is a well resourced multi-disciplinary team that offers mental health and psychological support to many patients and their families in both inpatient and outpatient settings at UCLH. We are a supportive team of people with many opportunities for specialist supervision and work based support.

Knowledge and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Core profession (Mental health professional, Counsellor, Clinical psychologist, Therapist, Social Care, Allied Health Professional) or recognised post-graduate degree level broad based (mental) health & social care qualification (MSc, post-graduate diploma) or Equivalent experience.
- Evidence of Continuing Professional Development in the last two years.
- Specialist knowledge acquired through training in a specialised discipline with reference to learning disability and ASC.
Desirable criteria
- Professional registration with recognised National Body (e.g. HCPC, NMC, BPS, BACP,BABCP BASW, TRA, HPSET)
Experience
Essential criteria
- Previous mental health knowledge and experience of working in a care environment and with service users who have complex health needs
- Proven experience of working with young people
- Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary and multi-agency environment.
- Demonstrable knowledge to post-graduate level
Desirable criteria
- Proven experience of working with young people in a healthcare setting.
- Working collaboratively with service users and their families/carers.
