Our extensive health services are provided by over 8,000 dedicated members of staff working from two acute hospitals in Hastings and Eastbourne, three community hospitals in Bexhill, Rye and Uckfield, over 100 community sites across East Sussex, and in people’s own homes.

Our two acute hospitals have emergency departments and provide 24 hour a day care, offering a comprehensive range of surgical, medical, outpatient and maternity services, supported by a full range of diagnostic and therapy services. Our centre for trauma services and obstetrics is at Conquest Hospital, while our centre for urology and stroke services is at Eastbourne DGH. At Bexhill Hospital we offer a range of outpatient, day surgery, rehabilitation and intermediate care services. At Rye, Winchelsea and District Memorial Hospital we offer outpatients, rehabilitation and intermediate services. At Uckfield Community Hospital we provide day surgery and outpatient care.
In the community, we deliver services that focus on people with long term conditions living well outside hospital, through our integrated locality teams working with district and community nursing teams. Community members of staff also provide care to patients in their homes and from a number of clinics, health centres and GP surgeries.
Job overview
Locum Consultant Histopathologist
The post holder will be required to play an active role in the general workload of the department, whilst the opportunity is available to develop specialist interests. The successful candidate will join an impressive team dedicated to providing a first-class patient-centred service. The post would suit either a first-time consultant or an established consultant Histopathologist wishing to relocate. Any applicant who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time, will be eligible to be considered for the post.
The Cellular Pathology Department at ESHT undertakes histopathology (including frozen sections), cytopathology, immunohistochemistry and autopsy pathology. Consultants share the work in each of the following main specialties: breast pathology, dermatopathology, gastrointestinal pathology, uropathology, and diagnostic cytopathology. Gynaecological pathology is currently outsourced therefore a histopathologist with specialist gynaecological skills and supporting governance would be advantageous to the department.
. There is no cervical cytology requirement. Participation in the coronial autopsy service is optional. Digitalisation of pathology is in progress at ESHT with go live next year.

The post will be based at Conquest site with cross site working at Eastbourne. As a senior employee of the Trust, you will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical medical, professional, and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trust’s patients.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The department is proudly UKAS accredited, with state of the art equipment, dealing with over 29000 surgical cases and 2000 non-gynae cytology specimens per year. Consultant workload is allocated using a Warwick workload allocation system. An established double reporting system for cancer cases is in place to enhance quality assurance. The case mix is that normally seen in a district general hospital, with consultants taking an integral role in cancer MDTs.
ESHT has two acute sites, located in Hastings and Eastbourne on the southeast coast. The area provides a choice of town or country living at affordable prices with a wide variety of leisure activities available nearby. There is also easy access to London and London airports.
Applicants are required to be registered medical practitioners. In addition, you will hold MRCPath/FRCPath or an equivalent level qualification.
