Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Hydrocephalus team at NHNN as a clinical nurse specialist (CNS). This is the largest centre for this condition in the UK and one of the largest in the world. Accepting local, territory and national referrals, the service cares for chronic, acute and secondary causes of hydrocephalus. We’re looking for an enthusiastic, knowledgeable and dedicated individual to enhance our team.

• To be able to triage hydrocephalus patients. Effectively treating as outpatients thus preventing unnecessary admissions
• Arranging necessary emergency admissions in acute hydrocephalus cases.
• Provide education to patients, families and healthcare professionals.
• To develop and participate in the hydrocephalus clinic and nurse led clinics
• To be a visible presence on the hospital wards, providing information and support to patients and staff.
• To be able to adjust shunt settings where necessary, following MRI or at doctors requests
• To assist in clinical trials, audits and research into hydrocephalus and future management
• To be an integral part of the hydrocephalus multidisciplinary team
• To represent the trust and both internal and external meetings relating to hydrocephalus
• To be accountable for co-ordinating patient care within the hydrocephalus service
• Provide a nurse led telephone clinic. Assessing patient needs and requirements and acting accordingly.
• Arrange for the day case admission of patients and provide treatment where necessary.
• Work closely with the patient’s neurosurgical consultant in order to effectively treat patients and ensure information is appropriately handed over.
• To manage an appropriate patient workload across the service, providing expert support and advice.• Key working relationships with all members of the multi-professional team, including nursing and medical staff, allied health professionals and support workers.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

SPECIALTY - Area specific job requirements*
• Provide support and education regarding hydrocephalus and surgery to patients and their carers
• Provide support for the consultant neurosurgeons in the provision of care to hydrocephalic in and out-patients
• Undertake routine telephone follow-up of post-operative patients
• Undertake in-patient/day case assessments as directed by consultant neurosurgeons
• Run a nurse-led out-patient clinic for hydrocephalic patients with consultant neurosurgical support.
• Prescribe drugs and therapy
• Makes changes to patients medication when clinically appropriate
• Undertake nurse led discharge for appropriate hydrocephalus patients
