Job overview
We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and highly motivated pharmacy technician to join our High Cost Drugs & Pharmacy Procurement teams. This post will be split into equal working hours across the working day for High Cost Drugs and Pharmacy Procurement.
Utilising underpinning pharmaceutical knowledge, you will support the management of High Cost Drug access schemes, collect, interpret, analyse & provide data reports and helping to utilise better value medicines. You will also support the Pharmacy Procurement team by completing core procurement and stores activities such as order monitoring, supply management, invoicing of medicines, staff supervision and contract implementation.
Applicants should possess NVQ level 3 or equivalent and a BTEC national certificate and be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council

We utilise accredited checking technicians throughout our dispensaries and are keen to develop further technical involvement within Medicines Management. We have a proven track record of developing qualified pharmacy technicians including those who are new to the hospital environment, providing opportunities for you to develop in areas such as: Dispensing, Accredited Checking (ACPT) and deputising for senior pharmacy technicians, all within structured development programs.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
High Cost Drugs Service Delivery Responsibilities
- To identify & ensure access to all appropriate High Cost Drug schemes in operation within the UK.
- To manage the administrative systems for High Cost Drugs services including orders, receipts, invoices and discrepancies.
- To support access to better value medicines.
- To analyse available data and produce monthly reports for identifying usage and savings of High Cost Drug. Presenting reporting to Drug and Therapeutics Group (DTC), the Area Clinical Effectiveness Group (ACE) and the High Cost Drugs Groups.
- To undertake a range of duties of an administration and technical nature including writing and following Standard Operating Procedures to deliver quality pharmacy support services.
- To provide guidance and training to colleagues regarding High Cost Drugs services and procedures.
- To ensure all relevant data is uploaded and managed in the Immunoglobulin data base for compliance
- To ensure all relevant data is uploaded and managed on BlueTeq data base for compliance & commissioner assurance.
- To ensure the Pharmacy Management System is kept up to date and new high cost drugs are added to the system correctly.
- To ensure medicine contracts are managed and updated through the Pharmacy Management System.
- To ensure accurate stock holding of high cost drugs and develop robust processes to adhere to this
- To support the entry of new high cost drugs under the direction of High Cost Drugs Pharmacists
- To support in the implementation, recording and reporting of Cost Improvement Plans
- To support the provision of Medicine Optmisation for High Cost Drugs & the services that provide them across Dudley Group Hospitals
Pharmacy Procurement and Stores Service Delivery Duties
- Day to day supervision of staff in procurement, including work of a clerical officers and technical staff.
- Work within guidelines and procedures ensuring that the procurement of medicines meet all legal, professional, organization requirements and that medicines are stores correctly and safely.
- To generate and transmit orders via ordering systems in place for pharmaceutical items, as well as utilising companies’ own electronic systems.
- To ensure orders are placed with the appropriate supplier on the correct date, taking account of weekend and bank holiday arrangements. This includes the ordering of intravenous fluids, unlicensed medicines and routine orders.
- Responsible for the routine operation of the stores department in the absence of the Senior Pharmacy Technician.
- Reporting of any stock discrepancies and ordering problems to the Chief Pharmacy Technician and Senior Pharmacy Technicians on their return.
- Supervision of the work of the pharmacy stores ATO’s when working in that area.
- Ensuring all documentation is complete correctly.
- To ensure all stocks of medicines are stored under the appropriate conditions and that stocks are rotated and date expired stock is disposed of.
- Liaise with and support Home Care and Clerical/Technical staff together with the relevant Pharmacist to maintain effective supply to homecare patients.
- To ensure that all MHRA, DH or NPSA alerts regarding medicines are acted upon in the appropriate timeframe.
- To redirect orders when manufacturers are unable to supply specific items, using training provided to identifying alternative suppliers to ensure continuity of supply. (With support when necessary from the appropriate senior technicians and pharmacists).
- To identify and resolve problems with supplier’s deliveries and inform senior staff when continuity of supply is compromised.
- Ensure that the relevant pharmacy staff are aware of medicines supply issues in line with procedures.
- To assist in the development and maintenance of the Pharmacy Procurement Procedure Manual’s.
Dispensary Area
To work under the direction of the Senior Technicians (Dispensary) and provide the daily Team Leader role in the dispensary when the Senior Technician is unavailable.
To be aware of all written Standard Operating Procedures to ensure accurate supplies of medicines are made and including the following duties:
- Dispensing for both in-patients and outpatients.
- Dispensing of discharge prescriptions.
- Replenishment of dispensary stocks.
- Counseling outpatients on their medication and being aware of when to refer to a Pharmacist for further advice.
- Dispensing of Controlled Drugs under supervision of the Pharmacist when authorised to do so.
- Dispensing of stocks for wards, departments, other hospitals and local authority clinics.
- Provides dispensing accuracy checks as an Accredited Checking Technician.
- To ensure the collection of prescription charges & money from sale of products follows Trust Standing Financial instructions.
- To issue controlled stationery including prescriptions & requisition books.
Risk Management
- To be aware of the importance of accuracy in performing technical activities within the department and ensure adequate concentration on such tasks.
- To refer medicines related problems to a pharmacist as appropriate under departmental procedures.
- To comply with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) code of ethics.
- To be aware of the Pharmacy Department’s Spillage Procedure and be able to act quickly and appropriately in the event of a spillage.
- To highlight failings in/problems with the departments Standard Operating Procedures to team leaders within the pharmacy.
Administrative/Clerical responsibilities
- Use of the pharmacy computer system to ensure accurate costings are made and full audit trails are available.
- To ensure records are maintained following local Standard Operating Procedures.
- To support the introduction of new starters, work experience staff and staff under training and to demonstrate and advise on work based activities as appropriate.
- To maintain staff and patient confidentiality at all times.
- To ensure all documentation filing is kept up to date and archived as necessary, following the legal requirements for the retention of pharmaceutical records.
- Work within Trust Medicines Management procedures to support patient care
- To manage the processing and accuracy checking of invoices from SLA works for the Pharmacy Department.
Ward Services Area
To work under the guidance of the Senior Technician following all written procedures and including the following duties:
- The observation of stock control procedure
- Ward Medicines Management services including dispensing for discharge, patient counselling & medication assessment also stock control systems where in operation.
- Distribution of stocks to wards, departments, other hospitals and local primary care clinics.
- Authorising ward orders and being aware when to involve the ward pharmacist.
- To assist with the distribution of pharmaceuticals to the Community Services, for example, Family Planning, Chiropody, Dental etc.
- To maintain all necessary records.
Health and Safety
- To understand and follow the Department of Pharmacy Procedures for the Safe Storage and Disposal of Drugs, and other hazardous substances always stored in and issued by the pharmacy.
- To minimise hazards in the working area and report any identifiable hazards to your Line Manager. To adhere to all safe systems of work applicable to the work area.
- To observe good practise when lifting and handling heavy inward and outward deliveries.
