Working for our organisation
As part of the initial application process, there will be a mandatory requirement for applicants to complete a 1000 word academic reflective piece of writing using a recognised reflective model (i.e. Gibbs, Rolfe). To assist you with how to formulate and write your reflective piece, please follow the essay completion guidance notes attached to the advert. Alternatively, SECAmb staff have been granted access to the UoC’s HeadStart® website which gives great insight and information to assist with study skills. The link to the UoC HeadStart® can be found here
The 1000 word piece will require you to write about an incident that you have attended within the past 12 months. This can be any nature of incident from a fall to a full arrest or a trauma situation. Remember that the reflective piece has to include all of the elements of your chosen cycle, so word count adherence is vital. The essay will need to be written using Microsoft Word and be submitted to the following SECAmb e-mail - [email protected] along with a cover sheet that includes your TRAC application number and final word count.
To aid applicants with their essay completion, Clinical Education will be happy to receive formative submissions which can be sent in at any time during the period that the advert is live to the [email protected] address. The team will supply feedback and areas of advice or support which in turn will allow the applicant the opportunity to complete their submission. A final summative submission date will then be set in agreement with the applicant and Clinical Education.
Note: Any applicant that has a statement/summary of support needs, do please make the recruitment team aware of this on submission of your application.
In addition and to give applicants further support, there will be a requirement for applicants to enrol on to the Open University’s (OU) free ‘Essay and Report writing skills module. As stated, this is a free 15 hour duration short programme that offers a certificated level 3 essay programme designed to improve any essay completion. As this is a certificated programme on completion, we would encourage applicants to sign up and complete as soon as possible. Any certificate gained will then need to be uploaded as part of your application to show that you have undertaken this programme. the link to the OU programme can be found here
Following completion of the shortlisting and essay stages, applicants will be invited to interview which is a joint process between SECAmb Clinical Education and the Faculty from the UoC. Full details of the interview dates, times and requirements will be sent out to successful candidates from the essay stage via TRAC.
Points to note:
Applicants who are successful in gaining a place on the Level 6 Apprenticeship BSc Paramedic Science programme with UoC will be required to follow the set timetables and are expected to take annual leave with minimal disruption to the programme. Any pre-planned leave may therefore have to be re-arranged or re-booked in accordance with the timetable.
This is a full-time commitment with regards to face-to-face study and clinical placement hours. Staff must work to a minimum of 30 hours per week. If you currently work less than 30 hours per week and you are successful in gaining a place on the programme, prior to enrolling with the UoC you will be required to increase your hours in order to meet the demands of the programme and to meet the full-time commitments.
Successful applicants will receive a student paramedic contract, requiring the individual to relinquish their current rota position. As of winter 2020 all staff on clinical development will have been moved to a relief rota to support operations in
planning shifts and minimise the balancing of hours during abstraction periods. Any pre-agreed flexible/tailored working arrangements would need to be re-negotiated in conjunction with the Operational, Education and University Teams.
On successful completion of the BSc, paramedic contracts will be issued once the applicant appears on the Health and Care Professions Council registrants list.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
For an operational balance of abstractions, the decision has been made to limit places to two per Dispatch Desk (DD). This is to allow for the amount of abstraction required to complete the programme without compromising operational demand. This will also be at the discretion of the relevant Operating Unit manager (OUM) as to whether staff can be released to attend the University.
