The Secretary of State has approved the partnership between St Helens & Knowsley and Southport & Ormskirk Hospitals.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
KEY DUTIES
Patient/Client Care
- To provide specialist psychological assessments of adults referred to the Clinical Psychology Service based upon the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of highly complex psychological data from a variety of sources including psychological and neuropsychological tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others involved in a person’s care.
- To formulate and implement plans for the formal psychological treatment and/or management of a person’s psychological problems, based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of the person’s problems, and employing methods of proven efficacy as appropriate for their age and physical health condition, across a range of contexts including inpatients and outpatients.
- To be responsible for implementing a range of psychological interventions for individual adults and groups, adjusting and refining psychological formulations, drawing upon different explanatory models and maintaining a number of provisional hypotheses.
- To evaluate and make decisions about treatment options taking into account their physical health condition, current medical treatment, both theoretical and therapeutic models and highly complex factors concerning historical and developmental processes that have shaped the individual.
- To exercise autonomous professional responsibility for the assessment, treatment and discharge of clients whose problems are managed by psychologically based treatment plans.
- To ensure that professionals in other agencies have access to a psychologically based formulation and treatment plan for adults within the service, through the provision of advice and consultation and the dissemination of psychological research and theory.
- To screen/assess and manage factors which may indicate a level of psychological or physical risk for individuals, and to provide general advice to other professionals on psychological aspects of risk assessment and management.
- To coordinate multi-agency or multi-disciplinary input, where appropriate, taking responsibility for initiating planning and review of psychological treatment, and communicating effectively with the service user and all others involved in the network of care, and to monitor progress during the course of multi-disciplinary interventions.
- To communicate in a skilled and sensitive manner, information concerning the assessment, formulation and treatment plans of service users under their care and to monitor and evaluate progress during the course of care. To communicate highly complex and/or sensitive information service users and other professionals involved in their care.
- To refer on to appropriative agencies/professionals for treatment or an opinion that is in the person’s best interests.
- To provide expertise and specialist psychological advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals contributing directly to the person’s diagnosis, formulation and intervention plan.
- To demonstrate awareness of potential communication difficulties and/or cultural considerations and, where appropriate adapt professional practice, accordingly, involving identification of, and effective liaison with, appropriate support services (e.g., advocacy, family support, translators).
TEACHING, TRAINING & SUPERVISION RESPONSIBILITIES
- To provide clinical placements for trainee clinical psychologists, ensuring that trainees acquire the necessary skills, competencies and experience to contribute effectively to good psychological care, and to contribute to the assessment and evaluation of such competencies.
- To provide clinical professional supervision and post-qualification training (CPD) to recently qualified clinical psychologists.
- To provide pre-qualification teaching of clinical psychology to doctoral clinical psychology training programmes.
- To maintain and develop skills in the area of professional post-graduate training and clinical supervision.
- To provide advice, consultation and training to and others where appropriate to help other professionals to provide psychologically informed interventions to improve a service user’s functioning.
- To provide clinical group supervision to clinical nurse specialists within the cancer team.
- In common with all clinical psychologists to receive regular clinical supervision in accordance with good practice guidelines.
POLICY & SERVICE DEVELOPMENT RESPONISIBILITIES
- To participate as a senior clinician in the development of a high quality, responsive and accessible service including advising both service and professional management on those aspects of the service where psychological and/or organisational matters need addressing.
- To represent the service at a local level by attending relevant multi-agency and multi-disciplinary forums, in order to support the development of multi-disciplinary and inter-agency working.
- To contribute towards the systematic governance of practice within the bariatrics tier 4 service and broader Clinical Health Psychology service.
HUMAN RESOURCES RESPONSIBILITIES
- To participate as appropriate in staff recruitment, both in the short-listing process and as a member of interview panels for assistant, trainee and qualified clinical psychologists.
INFORMATION RESOURCES RESPONSIBILITIES
This should be in bullet point format and should be included if the post holder has any financial responsibility ie is a budget holder or authorised signatory and should detail their responsibility in this regard. RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT
- To contribute to the evaluation, monitoring and development of the service’s operational policies, through the deployment of professional skills in research, service evaluation and audit, ensuring incorporation of psychological frameworks for understanding and provision of high quality care.
- To utilise theory, evidence-based literature and research to support evidence based practice in individual work and work with other team members.
- To undertake appropriate research and provide research advice to other clinical psychologists or other professionals undertaking research.
- To initiate project management, including complex audit and service evaluation, with colleagues within the service to help develop and improve services to clients.
- To commission and supervise research projects at doctoral thesis level undertaken by trainee clinical psychologists, and to assist in the dissemination of the outcomes of this research.
- To commission and supervise other research and audit projects undertaken by assistant psychologists.
- To record clinical observations and information relevant to children, young people and adults in accordance with service policy, ensuring accurate documentation of clinical activity and outcomes.
