Consultant Clinical Scientist in Immunology and Clinical Specialty Lead in immunology
We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated Consultant Clinical Scientist to lead our busy Immunology team. You will support the team to effectively deliver pathology services to our internal and external service users
The Immunology department at Bart’s Health NHS Trust is looking for a confident and motivated Consultant Clinical Scientist to lead the laboratory service. The role is a key post, developing and delivering our local, trust and network strategy. Bart’s Health NHS Trust is situated in East London and is formed by The Royal London Hospital, Bart’s Hospital, the London Chest Hospital, Newham University Hospital and Whipps Cross University Hospital. The Immunology department provides a comprehensive service for in-patients as well as operating a regional referral service. We are a progressive and busy department looking for an enthusiastic person to lead this excellent team. You will have experience of leading an Immunology laboratory, be organised and work well under pressure.

The department has state of the art flow cytometry facilities, ELISA processors, Phadia 250 analysers for autoimmunity and allergy, and automated immunofluorescence processors. The department is involved in translational research and had a range of specialist / bespoke manual assays. We are a national referral centre for some biological monitoring tests.
We are supported by an active teaching-hospital environment, with a comprehensive range of accredited CPD activities and we actively encourage professional development. The Immunology department is located in a purpose built Pathology and Pharmacy Building at the Royal London Site. The laboratory is fully UKAS accredited, and has full HCPC/IBMS/STP/HSST training status.
The department is actively engaged in the expansion and development of the East and South East NHS Pathology Network, with consolidation of Immunology on the Royal London Hospital site
Working for our organisation
The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership is an arms-length organisation providing pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health.
The Pathology Partnership is based on well-established models for pathology networks, with the Royal London Hospital becoming the main hub laboratory for the network and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) as a minimum at all other Hospital sites.
Pathology is made up of the following services - Blood Sciences including Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry; Infectious Diseases including Microbiology and Virology; Cellular Pathology including Histopathology, non-gynae Cytology and mortuary services; Immunology; Cytogenetics and Molecular Haematology; Immunophenotyping; Clinical Transplantation and Retinoblastoma.
The 2020/21 total operating costs across the Partnership were c. £126m per annum with a workforce establishment of circa. 822 WTE. Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Degree or assessed equivalent level of knowledge. MSc in relevant subject or assessed equivalent level of knowledge. Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists, or externally assessed as equivalent.
- Evidence of Continuing Professional Development
- Current registration as a Clinical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council. Management and/or leadership qualification, or equivalent skills, knowledge and experience
Desirable criteria
- HSST in Immunology at the time of application or expectation of possession within 3 months of interview.
- Doctorate (research or vocational) in Immunology or relevant subject
Experience
Essential criteria
- Significant experience as a Registered Clinical Scientist and a broad and comprehensive experience in the field.
- Experience of taking responsibility for complex aspects of service delivery and development without direct supervision
- Experience directing/managing and leading services.
- Experience in managing and developing people.
- Evidence of developing services, policies and procedures and liaison with service users on strategic direction
- Developed expertise in one or more specialised analytical or clinical areas to a point of acting at an expert level.
- Good record of achievement in research, development and audit activities, through presentations at national or international conferences and publication in peer reviewed journals
- Completion of audits that have contributed to improvements in clinical practice
- Experience in UKAS /ISO 15189 Accreditation either from the laboratory perspective or as an assessor
- Experience of policy implementation (e.g. in response to national guidelines)
