We provide a full range of acute clinical services from Northampton General Hospital and Danetre Hospital in Daventry. We are a designated cancer centre and have recently invested in a number of additional specialist services, including in-patient renal services and interventional cardiology. All elective inpatients and emergency admissions are screened for MRSA. As part of our work to improve clinical outcomes we are taking part in a national patient safety programme and have invested in systems to capture patients views on the service we provide. We understand that sometimes a small change can make a big difference for patients.

A vacancy has arisen for a Band 8A Matron for Infection Prevention & Control within the Infection Prevention & Control Team at Northampton General Hospital.
The post is a full time permanent post covering duties within the core hours of 08.00-17.00 Monday to Friday. The successful candidate must have a minimum of 5 years post graduate experience as a Registered Nurse, 2 years experience as a Band 7 Infection Prevention & Control (IPC) Clinical Nurse Specialist, and an IPC post graduate qualification.

The main duties of this integral role is to manage the IPC Team to deliver the IPC agenda ensuring that systems and processes are in place to protect patients from infection. This involves working with teams across the Trust including the clinical teams, Microbiology Team, Estates, Occupational Health, Health & Safety to maintain high standards of IPC practice and profile within the organisation. The Matron for IPC leads the IPC Team to deliver on HCAI annual plan of work that includes surveillance of micro-organisms, surgical site surveillance, outbreak prevention and management strategies, the annual audit schedule, IPC mandatory training, fit testing, ensuring IPC policies and procedural documents are reviewed.
An experienced, motivated and independently minded clinical infection prevention and control leader who is able to act on their own initiative, adopting a values led ‘can do’ leaderships style within a climate of constant change and uncertainty. Under the leadership of the Associate Director of

Working closely with the Associate Director of Infection Prevention & Control to support the development of the long term Infection Prevention & Control Strategies and Annual Infection Prevention & Control Programme.
Ensuring the Trust meets both national and local targets in line with the Trust objectives.
The post holder will monitor and evaluate the impact of the Infection Prevention and Control Strategy and its working practices.
Contributing to the development of the infection control service delivery and transformation plans across the Trust, implementing plans, including those involving cross pathway working for the profession working internally and externally in support of enhanced patient care, safety
and quality of services using established project methodology.
Co-ordinating and leading the development of a quality Infection Prevention and Control service.
Providing expert, specialised advice on all matters relating to infection prevention and control, outbreak management and hospital hygiene to senior clinicians and managers, wards and departments; and to staff involved in the planning of clinical services or facilities.
With the Associate Director of IPC ensuring that all clinical governance processes are in place for the infection prevention and control service, including leading on regular and annual reporting, verifying specific data relating to infection prevention and control and ensuring that
all policies are up to date.
With the Associate Director of IPC lead compliance with the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (rev 2010) – Code of Practice on the prevention and control of infections and related guidance to maintain registration and all relevant CQC fundamental standards and ensuring that the
infection prevention and control service demonstrates the qualities of a well led service.
Oversee the delivery of effective infection prevention and control education programme.
Purchasing of some physical assets and supplies including working with procurement and contracts as necessary to ensure supplies are cost effective and value for money.
Leadership and Management.
Lead and coordinate the development of a quality infection prevention and control service.
Develop and implement an annual programme of work for the prevention and control of infection in the acute and write a quarterly and annual report.
Lead and manage the Infection control team and be responsible for appraisals, PDP and objectives.
Be responsible for ensuring that objectives are set and managed against.
To represent the Trust and deputise for the Associate Director of Infection Prevention & Control & DIPC / Director of Nursing at strategic and operational meeting internally and externally for infection prevention and control issues as necessary
Interpret health legislation and directives relating to infection prevention and control with regard to their impact on, or applicability to the Trust, and to ensure their effective implementation through high profile leadership as appropriate.
To ensure that grievances/disputes and complaints related to infection prevention and control are resolved speedily and at the lowest possible level of the organisation.
Lead and support quality improvement processes and applied research in partnership with other department’s e.g. clinical governance, research and development, clinical audit.
Lead the development of organisational strategies by working closely with directorate and Divisional leads to foster a culture that embeds best practice in infection prevention and control and sustainable organisational change.
Advise the Trust on financial matters pertaining to infection prevention and control including the expenditure of outbreaks, and the procurement of goods and services within sphere of responsibility.
Initiate, develop and deliver activities that result in income generation for the Infection Prevention and Control Team.
Develop effective relationships with key professionals at neighbouring hospitals and Whole Health Economy and Commissioners.
Manage any infection prevention and control service that is contracted to be provided by the Trust, ensuring that quality indicators are met and reported on appropriately.
With the Associate Director of IPC & DIPC / Director of Nursing, ensure that regular self assessment is undertaken against compliance with the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (rev 2010) Code of Practice on the prevention and control of infections and related guidance to maintain registration with the CQC and provide assurance that compliance is achieved.
Specialist Practitioner
Act as an expert role model in nursing care within the Trust.
Use advanced nursing expertise to advise all grades and disciplines of staff on appropriate care for all inpatients, outpatients and community patients in order to prevent and control infection.
Act as a specialist adviser and resource to all staff, clinical and non-clinical, on issues relating to infection prevention and control.
Liaise and work closely with Consultant Microbiologists and Antibiotic Pharmacists to monitor antibiotic stewardship and support reduction of antibiotic resistance across organization.
Communicate and engage with Sepsis and Antibiotic stewardship teams.
Liaise and communicate with outside agencies where required, to effectively manage outbreaks and individual infections, especially Public Health England (PHE), Environmental Health (EH).
Investigate Outbreaks and episodes of cross infection with reference to their source, mode of spread and means of control within the Trust. Investigate critical incidents associated with infection using analytical tools such as root cause analysis (RCA). Liaise with the Patient
Safety Team and Health and Safety personnel.
Ensure mechanisms for reporting mandatory infectious diseases, surveillance and critical incidents are maintained.
Work in collaboration with Sisters, Matrons and the Infection Prevention and Control Team, Clinical Site Manager and Bed Manager regarding movement and isolation of patients with infection or infectious diseases.
Work closely with Estates –regarding new builds, refurbishments, water safety and ventilation systems.
Provide effective advisory and psychological care to patients with infections, their relatives and relevant others, that may be of a sensitive and emotive nature.
Advise on the procurement of equipment and products to ensure that they do not represent an infection risk to patients, staff and other users of the hospital.
Provide expert infection prevention and control advice on new and refurbishment building projects in the Trust.
Clinical Research/Audit/Quality Assurance
With the Associate Director of IPC develop and review infection prevention and control policies and procedures specific to the Trust with other members of the Infection Prevention and Control Team in line with legislation and ensure that assurance frameworks are in place to
monitor compliance.
Plan, organise and coordinate audit and monitoring of the ward and hospital environment to ensure that infection prevention and control practices are concordant with the Trust’s strategy
and NHS plan.
Develop, organise and coordinate surveillance programmes, e.g. Surgical Site Infection Surveillance (SSIS) in collaboration with the DIPC & Consultant Microbiologists.
Ensure, with relevant colleagues that national standards are implemented relating to air, water, domestic, laundry, pest control and catering services.
People/Management Excellence
Undertake annual appraisals and personal development planning for direct reports.
Ensure compliance with statutory and mandatory educational and training requirements for direct reports and their teams. Manage line managers to ensure that all nursing staff recognise their individual responsibilities to education and training.
Provide expert clinical advice to recruitment panels.
Undertake full scope of HR process to recruit, retain and proactively manage staff in line with Trust policies, seeking advice from HR Business Partners as necessary.
Lead HR investigations in line with Trust policy Education
Ensure that infection prevention and control programmes of continuous education are provided in line with the needs of the Trust and current national legislation- to all grades of clinical and Non-clinical staff.
Develop and provide educational and advisory material for patients, their families and visitors.
Develop and maintain the Trust’s Infection prevention and control Link Programme, ensuring all departments are involved.
Act as a resource able to educate, advice and inform patients, relatives and the general public about infection prevention and control and related issues.
Develop effective relationships with key professionals at neighbouring hospitals and other relevant organisations.
