Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust (WWL) officially attained Teaching Hospital status on 1st April 2020; this is the start of our ambition to achieve University Teaching Hospital status. Supported by Edge Hill University, the University of Bolton and the University of Central Lancashire, with approval from regulators NHS Improvement/England and the Department of Health and Social Care, from the 1st April 2020, the Trust will now be known as Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (WWL).
Attaining Teaching Hospital status enables WWL to further enhance education and training capacity, grow research capability and improve the recruitment and retention of high quality staff across all professions. Ultimately, this will result in a positive impact on the quality of care and outcomes for patients.

Applications are invited for a Matron to join our senior nursing team at our internationally renowned Orthopaedic centre at Wrightington Hospital.
We are a centre of excellence offering Orthopaedic surgery to our local community and beyond. With relationships nationally and internationally providing services to patients from all over the country and internationally.
You will be joining at a very exciting time, we have recently been accredited with Greater Manchester Surgical Hub Status.
We are seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic Matron to take a key leadership role within our MSK portfolio. As a key member of the nursing leadership team, you will be passionate about providing the best possible patient care across all areas of the division. Responsible for ensuring that our patients and our staff are at the centre of everything we do; you will thrive in a multidisciplinary team environment, and committed to the delivery of high quality, safe care supporting excellent outcomes.
We are looking for someone with the drive and determination to enable transformational and sustainable improvements in patient care, safety and supporting delivery of the elective programme.
As an experienced senior nurse, you will have knowledge of workforce management and governance. Ideally , you will have a background in the specialty. The successful candidate will have access to development opportunities to progress in their role and future aspirations.

The post holder will provide Clinical Leadership and line management to the clinical teams within the Division. Support the overall day-to-day functioning of the clinical areas , ensuring that the highest quality of patient centred care is delivered by the appropriately skilled nursing/ midwifery workforce, roster management and safe care review and through effective leadership, setting, monitoring and maintenance of professional standards and collaborative working. , management of complaints and leading the nursing contribution to Clinical Governance at a Directorate

Duties and Responsibilities
- The Modern Matron will be responsible for delivering some aspects of corporate professional Nursing and Midwifery Agenda as it relates to the area in which they work.
- Supporting the Ward/ Departmental Managers/ Heads of Nursing / Midwifery with Clinical Governance, effectiveness and quality. The Modern Matron will monitor clinical and environmental standards and act as a source to continuously improve these.
- The Modern Matron will contribute to the strengthened role of the ward / Departmental Senior Nurses and Midwives, supporting the development of effective clinical leaders at all levels, ensuring that leadership and clinical practice functions are carried out effectively, making best use of available resources.
- The Modern Matron will act as a role model and work within legislation and Trust procedures monitoring and maintaining professional standards.
- The Modern Matron will provide a visible, accessible and authoritative presence in order to provide assistance and advice to the workforce, patients and carers.
- The Modern Matron will be responsible for monitoring clinical standards within clinical teams, ensuring staff competency, setting objectives and targets, and keeping agreed programmes of work to timetable. The Modern Matron will also be expected to play a proactive role in quality improvement.
- The post holder will contribute to ongoing service development and redesign through the demonstration of expert clinical knowledge within their specialist field.
Planning and Organisational Duties
- Participate, in conjunction with the Divisional Management Team, in the production of the Division’s Annual Business Plan. To contribute to the formulation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the Division’s strategic and operational plan concerning, staff competency, staff objectives and targets, time plans, quality improvement.
- Co-ordinate and assess the operational planning of the service to enable the Trust’s and the Divisional objectives to be met
- Monitor service delivery, identifying and investigating any issues arising within the clinical area, formulating and adjusting plans to ensure that care is delivered in the appropriate care setting.
- Collaborate with all staff to maintain a safe, clean working environment, recognising changing priorities and risks, and implementing corrective actions within own limits and informing the relevant people
- Ensure that staffing levels are appropriate to patient need by working with Team Leaders and Senior Nurses and Midwives to assess patient dependency and adjust duty rotas accordingly, and to develop proposals for changes to skill mix and staff establishments. Using information gathered from national and professional bodies.
- Provide effective clinical leadership and management which fosters teamwork across professional and organisational boundaries
- To support clinical governance leads within the divisions by contributing to the development and maintenance of governance processes i.e. clinical incident reporting, risk management, policies and procedures.
- To act as a role model and work within legislation and Trust procedures, ensuring the compliance of all staff working within the unit.
- Ensure all nurses comply with NMC regulations and work within their scope of practice.
- Responsible for investigation of and action planning of all reported incidents,
Communications and Key Working Relationships
- Being highly visible and accessible to patients and staff, maintaining clinical and professional competence, authority and credibility through active and regular engagement in clinical practice and contact with patients and patient representatives.
- Resolve problems for patients and their relatives by acting quickly to deal with problems when and where they occur and by working closely with the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) and the Complaints Service.
- Ensure that patients are treated with respect and that their privacy and dignity are protected, and that they are addressed in the way that they choose.
- Challenge behaviour that undermines the rights of others, respecting people’s diversity and valuing them as individuals
- Ensure that patients receive consistent quality care by taking responsibility for driving up standards of care and leading work to improve professional practice and patient services. Guided by local and national agendas.
- Facilitate participation in and audit of clinical benchmarks.
- Supporting all staff in dealing with situations involving violence and aggression.
- Responsible for ensuring all staff comply with Trust Security Policies.
Responsibility for Finance
- Support the Divisional Management Team in the procurement and commissioning of services, products and equipment, offering advice on the prioritisation of equipment requirements and manpower requirements.
- They will effectively manage physical and financial resources, ensuring balanced financial budgets, within their own areas of responsibility.
- Ensure that systems are in place to monitor the delivery of goods and services
- Manage the pay and non pay budgets in partnership with the clinical teams, supporting and facilitating the devolution of ward / department budgets to senior sisters and midwives.
- Regular review of establishments and skill mix ensuring appropriate levels are maintained and secured in line with service development.
- Ensure the efficient use of bank and agency staff, monitoring quality and expenditure, authorising payments.
Responsibility for Human Resources
- Contribute to workforce planning for the Division/Directorate by identifying appropriate succession planning that supports workforce requirements for the future.
- Ensure effective recruitment and retention initiative are implemented in conjunction with senior staff both within the Division and Corporately, and that they are in line with Trust processes and systems
- Implement annual, individual performance reviews and personal development plans for all clinical staff within area of responsibility, enabling career progression and succession planning
- Contribute to and promote a culture that values staff, recognising and acknowledging achievement whilst positively addressing poor performance
- Ensure implementation of and compliance with all Trust Human Resource Policies and Procedures e.g. Disciplinary & Grievance matters.
- Ensure that staff attend mandatory training, to comply with Trust objectives.
- Empower staff by enabling them to undertake a wider range of clinical responsibilities and to develop and apply their knowledge and skills in practice providing timely feedback
- Provide professional and clinical supervision for staff, demonstrating advanced clinical knowledge, judgement and decision making.
- Act as line manager for several/multiple varied specialised departments and clinics, including nursing, clerical and support staff.
Responsibility for Health & Safety
- Work closely with Infection Control Teams and Senior Nurses and Midwives to ensure robust audit, action planning and change management to minimise risk of hospital acquired infection and to strengthen measures to prevent / control spread of infection
- Work collaboratively with Facilities to ensure all standards of cleanliness are agreed in line with “NHS Clean Hospitals Programme”, and encourage and support senior staff to monitor and challenge when standards of environmental cleanliness are not achieved or maintained.
- Support senior staff in collaboration with Facilities, to implement “Better Hospital Food Programme” to include the new NHS Menu and 24hour patient access to adequate food to meet their dietary needs. Ensure action is taken when standards of quality, quantity and timeliness are not being met.
- Compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 – the post holder is required to fulfil a proactive role towards the management of risk in all of their actions. This entails the risk assessment of all situations, the taking of appropriate actions and reporting of all incidents, near misses and hazards, and a statutory duty of care for their own personal safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions.
