The NPIS wishes to appoint two Medical Information Scientists to its offices based in the city of Newcastle upon Tyne. The NPIS is a national service, commissioned by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). The NPIS comprises of four units based in Birmingham, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Newcastle and provides a 24-hour telephone advice service, 365 days a year for health care professionals on the diagnosis, treatment and management of the poisoned patient. The Newcastle unit forms part of the Regional Drug and Therapeutics Centre directorate within the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. NPIS Newcastle specifically, is affiliated with the UK Teratology Information Service (UKTIS), based within the same unit and provides advice about exposures to drugs and chemicals during pregnancy.

Working as part of a team, the Medical Information Scientists appointed will participate in the delivery of a 24-hour, 7 day week service through a 24 hour rota system, including night shifts, regular work at weekends, evenings and public holidays.
When not rostered on a telephone shift, the Medical Information Scientists will be expected to undertake a range of other duties. This will include, but not limited to, contributing to the updating of the primary clinical toxicology database of the NPIS known as TOXBASE, contributing to research projects both in-house and nationally, as well as local and national continuous professional development meetings.
Applicants should have a degree in Pharmacology or a Biomedical Science subject combined with a knowledge of Pharmacological Sciences or a nursing qualification. Consideration will be given to other science related degrees where an element of these subjects has been studied. Applications are welcome from recently graduated individuals and/or experienced healthcare professionals alike. Excellent communication and organisational skills, and the ability to work in a team and independently is essential. Experience in the delivery of information to health care or other professional staff and/or members of the public is also essential. A full comprehensive training package will be provided on appointment.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
To provide specialist information in assisting with the treatment and management of clinically complex poisonings. To compile toxicological information and management advice for TOXBASE, a computerised database of the NPIS available to all healthcare providers.
The Medical Information Scientist (Poisons and Teratology) will:
- Answer enquiries from authorised users of the National Poisons Information Service (i.e. A&E Medics / nurses and GP’s), providing them with information and advice appropriate to the management of poisoning or suspected poisoning.
- Provide an out-of-hours telephone answering service for the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and refer calls to the Environmental Scientific Officer on call, conforming to the standard operating procedure.
- Provide information or offer advice to members of the public on occasions when they, or someone they know, may have attempted self-harm or be intoxicated.
- Plan, write and deliver educational material for Accident and emergency departments throughout the North of England and Greater London area, provide training for NHS Direct/NHS 111 staff by means of organised study courses and one on one training sessions.
- Research detailed toxicological literature in order to produce information datasheets and monographs to facilitate the development of the nationally recognised Poisons Information Database, TOXBASE. The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) recommends TOXBASE as the primary reference for management advice regarding the poisoned patient. Therefore TOXBASE is available to all A&E departments, GP surgeries drug information departments and NPIS Centres.
- Specialists in Poisons Information (SPIs) may be required to provide
information and data upon request for the UKHSA on the emergency 24 hour basis and occasionally perform general research into specified areas (eg perform a literature search for health effects of potassium and manganese in water supply and email appropriate articles to environmental scientists in UKHSA). - Provide a tablet identification service for all health professionals (including Police) using a specialist drug reference database.
- Follow up selected enquiries either via telephone or a written questionnaire in accordance with the NPIS Clinical Governance arrangements.
- Provide a telephone answering service for the UK Teratology Information Service (UKTiS) and refer the calls deemed relevant to the on call Consultant Toxicologist as directed by the standard operating procedure.
