Guy’s and St Thomas’ is among the UK’s busiest and most successful NHS foundation trusts. We provide a full range of hospital and community services for people in south London and as well as specialist care for patients from further afield including cancer, renal, orthopaedic, respiratory and cardiovascular services.
Guy’s is home to the largest dental school in Europe and a £160 million Cancer Centre opened in 2016. As part of our commitment to provide care closer to home, in 2017 we also opened a cancer centre and a kidney treatment centre at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup. St Thomas’ has one of the largest critical care units in the UK and one of the busiest emergency departments in London. It is also home to Evelina London Children’s Hospital.
Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions.
Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.
In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. Our merger provides a once in a generation opportunity to build a lasting, world-renowned heart and lung centre, providing the highest quality care for patients and conducting world-leading research.

Job overview
This is an exciting opportunity for someone to help drive forward the Trust commitment to be an inclusive, anti-racism organisation and to support our wider Equality Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) work from both a clinical services and workforce perspective. Your remit will be to lead on the implementation of our EDI Programme of work and subsequent action plans from within the HR team, to provide support across the organisation as teams implement their equality actions and to develop our wider EDI focus. You will have an influential role within the Trust to embed our values and promote a culture that celebrates and embraces differences.
Alongside excellent EDI expertise, knowledge of HR practice, policies and processes, and an understanding of employment law, you will have a real passion to make change and influence staff to work ethically with an awareness of inclusive practice. You will be able to provide appropriate professional advice, guidance, support, and practical help to the Trust on all matters relating to equality, diversity, and human rights. This will include interpreting and assessing the implications of pending legislation and encouraging the development of a culture that is socially inclusive and values diversity.

Advert
The Associate Director will also be responsible for advising the Director for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion regarding equality and diversity issues, including changes to legislation, publication of relevant Government and Department of Health documents, good practice.
They may be asked to represent the Trust within the NHS, partner organisations and the wider community, working closely with them to institute integrated working in the best interests of both patient care and the workforce. This will include development of effective external partnerships with local and national agencies, including the voluntary sector.
The Associate Director of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion will play a key role in ensuring that the Trust meets its equality legislation and public sector duties and will lead the Trust beyond just meeting the legislative requirements and duties to build its reputation as a gold standard leader in equality and diversity matters.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
- Work with the Trust Clinical Group Executive Teams, and corporate and clinical leaders to develop the cultural conditions for dynamic ED&I leadership and cultural change across GSTT.
- Lead the implementation of the EDI Programme ensuring lasting inclusive cultural transformation across the Trust.
Local Leadership and Engagement
- Provide effective leadership, coordination and management of the EDI function on behalf of the Director or EDI and the Chief People Officer with a key focus on improvement and outcomes.
- Design an appropriate stakeholder engagement strategy to ensure wide reach of the EDI programmes of work.
Health Inequalities
Work with relevant senior colleagues to:
- Oversee the development and implementation of support for our local community to ensure any inequalities in delivery and effectiveness of care are minimised.
- Ensure our local community and patients are involved and participate in the development of services and the way our care is provided
Expert Advisor
- Be the Trust’s expert advisor on equalities legislation, regulations and codes of practice and ensure that the current and emerging legal, regulatory and policy drivers on equality and diversity are met.
- Work collaboratively with senior leaders to advise on complex EDI investigations, complex changes or organisational design programmes to ensure processes are in line with best practice and promote EDI.
External Influencer
- Work across organisational boundaries to ensure that the Trust adopts EDI good practice and is delivering a step change in our local agenda.
- Draw from experience and expertise in other academic fields and industries, ensuring that the organisation benefits from relevant engagement and inclusion initiatives.
Senior Leadership Engagement
- Support communication to the leadership community, Executive Teams and stakeholder groups to report on transformative initiatives and their progress.
- Support the creation of leadership development training programmes that deliver impactful and strategic solutions focused on implementing new and inclusive ways of leading & managing.
Data, Insight Analysis and Reporting
- Provide the Trust Leadership Team and Trust Board with regular updates on progress against the WRES, WDES and other national metrics as well as local success measures.
- Continue to develop the Trust’s EDI dashboard, using the analysis of this to drive positive change in the organisation.
People Management and Leadership
- Manage internal EDI budgets, monitoring spend against budget, contributing to financial initiatives and cost improvement programmes.
- Take the strategic lead on specific projects or pieces of work on behalf of the Director of EDI and Chief People Officer, taking responsibility for the achievement of outcomes within required timescales.

Essential criteria
- Extensive in-depth demonstrable capability and capacity for service management at a senior level in a large, complex healthcare environment, including significant staff management, financial management and change management
- Extensive experience of working at senior management level to manage team(s) and to influence strategy, policy and project development and implementation
- Extensive experience in equality and diversity issues with demonstrable evidence of developing and implementing equality and diversity initiatives across multiple diversity strands
- A proven credible and influential communicator with excellent networking and negotiating skills demonstrating experience of working with a diverse range of stakeholders and a successful track record of influence and engagement
- Work with the HR department of the Trust to ensure that all managers and employees comply with appropriate polices and procedures, HR best practice, employment law and equality legislation
