We provide a full range of acute clinical services from Northampton General Hospital and Danetre Hospital in Daventry. We are a designated cancer centre and have recently invested in a number of additional specialist services, including in-patient renal services and interventional cardiology. All elective inpatients and emergency admissions are screened for MRSA. As part of our work to improve clinical outcomes we are taking part in a national patient safety programme and have invested in systems to capture patients views on the service we provide. We understand that sometimes a small change can make a big difference for patients.

There is now an opportunity to come and join our dynamic therapy team at NGH, as part of the Respiratory and Critical Care Team. We are looking to recruit a hardworking, motivated and dedicated B7 PT Clinical Lead for our Respiratory Team; where you will be supported and encouraged to develop your knowledge and skills.
You should have a well-rounded experience working in acute adult wards with significant experience in respiratory and critical care settings and an interest in further developing your skills in managing and supporting a team. You will work flexibly under continuously challenging conditions alongside two other Respiratory Band 7 Therapists to offer excellent patient care and drive service development in an ever-evolving respiratory team.
We have a new Critical Care unit, new Level 1 Respiratory area and Northampton has become the regional Head and Neck Cancer centre. This is a truly exciting time to join our team!
The Therapies department has a newly appointed Practice Development Therapist to assist in the development of our services and staff.
NGH have also launched the Nursing, Midwifery and AHP strategy putting AHP’s on the map and bringing new innovative opportunities and practices to the trust.

This position is a perfect balance between fast paced assessments for discharge and rehabilitation with our long stay respiratory/critical care patients with multifactorial rehabilitation needs. There will be plenty of opportunity for service development and to demonstrate leadership skills. The successful applicant will work as part of the on-call rota and weekend working will be required. Training & support is available in addition to regular on call update sessions.
The post holder will work within our joint therapy team as a valued member of the MDT to drive change, deliver excellent patient care and innovative practice. We are doing lots of work to develop our rehabilitation pathway for patients with a high acuity both on our Respiratory & Critical Care wards. We also have 3 Physiotherapists trained in Lung Ultrasound who were among the first 25 Physiotherapists in the country to receive this accreditation.

To perform a specialised Physiotherapy role within the Critical Care & Respiratory multidisciplinary team covering adult in-patients, alongside the Band 7 Critical care Occupational Therapist.
To lead physiotherapy assessment and treatment for patients with highly complex respiratory, mobility, psychological and palliative care needs.
To act as a role model for clinical, operational and professional leadership, setting and upholding agreed standards and processes to enable patients to receive high quality evidence-based care.
To support the implementation of the Critical Care Rehabilitation Pathway in line with Guidelines for Provision of Intensive care Services (GPICS) and Nice Guidance for Rehabilitation after Critical Illness (CG83).
To support the implementation of the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) guidelines.
To participate in the planning, development and evaluation of the Therapies service within the trust, holding responsibility for defined projects and activities and providing regular feedback to Therapy and clinical leads.
To regularly educate and supervise Therapy staff members and students. Lead on teaching and training for healthcare colleagues on aspects of clinical care relating to Respiratory and Critical Care Physiotherapy.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To manage a complex clinical caseload and demonstrate enhanced practice in holistic assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care. This will necessitate high levels of autonomy and advocacy that ensures the delivery of appropriate care.
To make a professional contribution to the multidisciplinary discussion and treatment planning/referral decisions of the team at their regular meetings.
To demonstrate enhanced knowledge, skill and innovative practice within the professional framework of physiotherapists. To ensure that there is a system of documentation that reflects this advanced practice.
To act as a role model demonstrating high standards of holistic care and provide clinical leadership.
To become acquainted with the national Guidelines for Provision of Intensive care Services (GPICS) and the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) guidelines.
To assist with developing policies and clinical guidelines in collaboration with the Therapy management team and other relevant members of the multidisciplinary team.
To promote clinical excellence reflecting the Trust's strategies for the Allied Health
Lead on the annual appraisal of allocated staff, collating a training needs analysis for the Head of Therapies to inform the development of workforce and training plans.
Participate in the on-call rota.
Participate and assist in the continual learning of all staff so that personal development plans progress and succession planning is promoted reflecting the needs of the therapy services.
PROVISION OF CLINICAL SERVICES
Demonstrate and apply a high level of understanding of illness, injury and disability and the complex interaction between health, functional ability, psychological and social issues, as appropriate to Occupational Therapy / Physiotherapy within Critical Care and Respiratory.
Identify, select, implement and evaluate the most appropriate intervention options which balance the complex interaction of risk, safety, patient choice, independence, areas of conflict and eligibility for services, and provide such expert advice and support to junior colleagues.
Communicate effectively with patients, carers, members of the clinical team, Therapy colleagues and other agencies as a representative of the Therapy services or multi-disciplinary team at various meetings and forums as appropriate.
Maintain accurate and up to date records of clinical interventions, consistent with legal and organisational requirements.
Apply and further develop specialist and complex knowledge and skills in order to ensure fitness to practice as a Physiotherapist within the clinical area, in line with competencies detailed in the Knowledge & Skills Framework Outline for this post.
IMPROVING PATIENT AND VISITOR EXPERIENCE
Be a point of contact for patients and relatives.
Lead on the development and sharing of patient and carer information.
Implement methods of gathering and using patient feedback to improve and develop services.
Respect the individuality, values, cultural and religious diversity of patients and contribute to the provision of a service sensitive to these needs.
Reflect on ethical issues which impact on the Therapies service provision and provide guidance to other staff as required.
Develop working guidelines, protocols and practices that enhance the patient experience in the clinical area in line with national and Trust policies in liaison with therapy and care group leads.
USING AUDIT, EVALUATION AND RESEARCH
Promote and lead on evidence-based practice and associated audit processes.
Work with peers to ensure that all agreed action plans from both national and local strategies, benchmarking standards and clinical audits are achieved.
Broaden research and development skills through participation in audit and research projects, initiating and taking the lead where appropriate.
Foster a culture which allows innovation and practice development.
MANAGEMENT AND TEAMWORK
Promote safe and effective communication channels within therapy and multi-professional teams both at NGH and with external agencies.
Facilitate all therapy team staff in accessing clinical support and supervision.
Keep Therapy and Care Group leads informed of all the relevant issues affecting patient care e.g. risk, staffing levels, and skills and equipment needs, providing as required, information and reports.
Participate in skill mix reviews based on patient dependency, case mix and activity data.
Represent Therapy services as required, deputising for the Head of Therapies and Deputy Head of Therapies as appropriate.
In the absence of Therapy colleagues through planned or unplanned leave, work flexibly to meet the prioritised needs of the Therapy services, both within the clinical area and across all service areas, assisting senior Therapy colleagues in co-ordinating cover when required.
Promote an awareness of the role of Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy within the care group area, negotiating priorities where appropriate.
Apply local and national guidelines and legislation relating to Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy provision within the clinical area and provide guidance to junior Therapy staff as appropriate.
Provide assurance to the Head of Therapies that all staff within the team achieve and maintain Trust and professional mandatory training and development required.
Ensure that approved competencies are fully implemented taking appropriate action as necessary.
TRUST WIDE RESPONSIBILITIES
Act as a resource for members of the multi-disciplinary teams across the trust through involvement in multi professional teaching and training in the area of expertise.
Act as a role model in customer service towards visitors to the hospital
Regularly attend and participate in care group and professional meetings, facilitating leadership of these meetings when required.
