We are seeking a Labourer/Driver to support the delivery of a quality repairs service. Working as part of a team, you will assist/carry out relevant trades works, but not limited to maintenance works, to all types of London Borough of Islington managed properties and social spaces, as scheduled or directed by supervisor and/or Team Manager.

The main areas of works are the varied driving capacity of loading/unloading goods for operatives in transit vehicles and/or LGV vehicles as required.
Assisting our multi-trade operatives in covering Brickwork, Groundworks, Carpentry, Glazing, Metalwork and the clearance of dust chutes together with miscellaneous items.

As directed by your office schedule planners and supervisors, working to ensure you are assisting your peers in daily reactive maintenance works within the diverse community and housing grounds of all of our assets.

1. Be competent in assisting in one or a range of trades; Carpentry, Decorating, Plastering, Bricklaying, groundwork’s, glazing, metalwork and tiling (wall and floor).
2. From time to time as when required by management assist in emergency call outs (for example as a result of bad weather, vandalism, fire etc.)
3. Work in a range of properties throughout the Borough, including occupied tenancies and offices and unoccupied buildings.
4. Where required be responsible for an Islington vehicle for use while on duty. The role holder is therefore required to ensure that the vehicle is safely and correctly driven and all equipment, materials safely stored.
5. Assist in the completion of specified works to a high standard of excellence in terms of completion of jobs and with customers/clients
6. Ensure that all tools (both hand held and powered) provided by Islington council are properly and appropriately operated, cleaned and stored.
7. Communicate with a high degree of accuracy (both written and verbally) to Management/Officer and work colleagues.
8. Report all breakages, breakdowns, accidents and other issues promptly to the Supervisor/Line Manager.
9. Be able assist in writing general reports for work orders.
10. Wear Islington council uniform at all times and carry ID which should be presented at all times on arrival at appointments
11. Attend appointments at specified times ensuring Management / Officers and Residents are informed of any delays
12. To keep up-to-date with services provided by Islington council and organisational policy and legal charges to ensure up-to-date information is provided to customers.
13. To use and assist others in the use of information technology systems to carry out duties in the most efficient and effective manner and to ensure that information is recorded accurately.
14. To undertake training, supervision, seminars, meetings and other events designed to improve communication and assist with the effective development of the post holder and service area.

Qualifications and Knowledge

- Proven track record within the construction industry for a minimum of 1 year, including driving of large vehicles suited to the role.
- Experience in providing reports using in written form.
- Ability to use IT systems including the use of a PDA for works order processing.
- Ability to demonstrate accountability and a positive attitude to your responsibilities as an employee of Islington council

- Demonstrates a comprehensive awareness of good construction safety practices and the application of safe systems of work including asbestos awareness, working at heights (including safe use of ladders, step ladders and scaffolds)
- Demonstrates the ability to organise your own workload, appropriately prioritising, ordering necessary materials and plant and working unsupervised for long periods of time
- Demonstrates the ability to work as part of a team, taking pride in the work completed and actively contributing to the team meeting the performance targets.
- Demonstrates the ability to verbally communicate with customers and colleagues, with the ability to answer customer queries clearly and concisely and maintaining constructive, effective working relationships with colleagues.
- Demonstrates the ability to communicate in writing in order to maintain records of materials used, complete job sheets and requisitions, use PDA’s, and follow written instructions, procedures and policies
- Demonstrates the ability to provide the highest standards of quality and customer service, including an understanding of how to work with customers from a variety of backgrounds and with a variety of needs.
- Demonstrates an adequate level of fitness to carry out the duties required, including the manual handling of tools and equipment, driving a vehicle, kneeling and twisting to carry out certain tasks
- Demonstrates a willingness to work flexibly in the interests of the service with a demonstrable ability to respond positively to new ideas and changes in working practices and procedures
- Displays an awareness, understanding and commitment to the protection and safeguarding of children and young people and or vulnerable adults
