Job overview
We are looking for a committed and enthusiastic assistant psychologist to work within our inpatient services for older people. The assistant psychologist will contribute to the provision of psychological assessment and psychological interventions under the supervision of a clinical psychologist.

Assessment work may be required including clinical assessments, psychological cognitive assessments and neuropsychological assessments under supervision of the psychologist.
Under the supervision of a clinical psychologist, you will have the opportunity to deliver a range of psychological interventions to service users as well as to develop and co-facilitate therapeutic groups with psychologists and clinicians. The post holder will support evaluation using appropriate outcome measures.
Non-clinical work would include assisting with administration, completing patient related data in electronic recording systems, including risk assessment and care planning. Further, you may support data collection, statistical analysis, and the development of research projects, teaching and project work.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post holder will be based full time on Amber Ward, with a highly skilled multi-disciplinary mental health staff team that include Nurses, Psychiatrists, Occupational Therapists, Health Care Assistants and Peer Support Workers .
1. To undertake, under the supervision of a qualified psychologist, protocol based psychological assessments of clients applying psychological, including neuropsychological, tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews, as appropriate, with clients, family members and others involved in the client’s care. To undertake standardised, protocol-based, psychological therapy procedures.
2. To assist in the formulation and delivery of care plans involving the psychological treatment and/or management of a client’s problems, under the supervision of a qualified practitioner psychologist, in both community and in-patient/residential settings.
3.Where required and appropriate, to assist in the coordination and running of therapeutic groups, under the supervision of a qualified clinical psychologist.
4. Where required and appropriate, to prepare psychology reports, under the supervision of a qualified practitioner psychologist.
5. Where required and appropriate, to attend and contribute to appropriate multi- disciplinary meetings.
6. To assist in the development of a psychologically based framework of understanding and care to the benefit of all clients of the service, across all settings where care takes place.
7. To participate in the running of therapeutic groups, collate, analyse and produce reports and outcome summaries
8. To maintain the highest standard of clinical record keeping including electronic data entry and recording, in accordance with professional codes of practice of the British Psychological Society and Trust policies and procedures.

Essential criteria
- Experience of working with people with mental health problems or social care needs
- Experience of working autonomously and managing a caseload of patients (under the clinical supervision of a qualified practitioner psychologist)
- Experience in communicating sensitive information to patients, carers and colleagues
Desirable criteria
- Experience of delivering evidence based Psychological Therapy interventions for people with complex mental health difficulties
- Experience of under taking client assessment including risk assessment
- Experience of delivering psycho-educational groups
Knowledge and Skills
Essential criteria
- High level communication skills (written and verbal) including an ability to communicate and work in settings in which the atmosphere may be highly emotive.
- Ability to develop good therapeutic relationships including telephone work with clients.
- High degree of organisational skills, ability to adjust priorities
- Good computer skills and the ability to use computer based information systems to record all client clinical information
Desirable criteria
- Experience or knowledge of applying psychological input in different cultural contexts and / or different socio-demographic and marginalised social groups.
- An understanding of research in health care settings
