Guy’s and St Thomas’ is among the UK’s busiest and most successful NHS foundation trusts. We provide a full range of hospital and community services for people in south London and as well as specialist care for patients from further afield including cancer, renal, orthopaedic, respiratory and cardiovascular services.
Guy’s is home to the largest dental school in Europe and a £160 million Cancer Centre opened in 2016. St Thomas’ has one of the largest critical care units in the UK and one of the busiest emergency departments in London. It is also home to Evelina London Children’s Hospital.
Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions.
Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.

Job overview
The post holder is expected to carry out all relevant forms of care for critically ill patient without direct supervision and is required to demonstrate procedures, supervise qualified and/or unqualified staff whilst maintaining a safe work environment.
Post holder will work closely with the Sister/Charge Nurse and multidisciplinary team members in monitoring and maintaining excellent clinical standards of nursing practice and staff development as part of the ward team. Also, act as a care team leader ensuring the needs of the patients are met.
To be responsible for the continuing professional development and overall performance of all staff by acting as a mentor with the support of their senior colleagues.
To take charge of and manage the 4 bedded bays as and when necessary. To be able to delegate tasks and activities to a range of team members in relation to patient care, for example when managing bays.
To be flexible in the approach to the clinical area and provide cover for any area specified.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Main tasks & responsibilities:
In partnership with other professionals provide excellent patient care. This process should include assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care in accordance with the Trust policies.

Participate in conducting nursing audit to achieve the agreed standards.
In conjunction with the staff team contribute to developing and maintaining a ward /department ethos and a standard approach to the delivery of excellent nursing care.
Provide a holistic approach to patient care and maintain excellent clinical standards of nursing practice. Within the ethos of the ward using research and evidence based practice.
Under the supervision of the sister/charge nurse contribute and participate to the process of setting goals and benchmarking standards of care. Collaborating with other members of the ward team to ensure the patient’s needs are met to a consistently high standard.
Promote awareness and compliance amongst colleagues regarding Trust policies, procedures, guidelines and standards.
To actively participate in the Trust’s framework of clinical governance within the ward or department area.
To provide a suitable and safe environment for the physical, psychological and spiritual well being for staff, patients/clients and their relatives/carers.
Identify and report clinical risks and report to the ward/departmental manager/modern matron so that appropriate action can be taken in accordance with the Trust risk management policy.
Record and report all incidents/complaints involving staff, patients and visitors in accordance with Trust policies and assist in any investigations as required.
To regularly take charge of the 4-bedded bays, utilising resources effectively.
