We provide a full range of acute clinical services from Northampton General Hospital and Danetre Hospital in Daventry. We are a designated cancer centre and have recently invested in a number of additional specialist services, including in-patient renal services and interventional cardiology. All elective inpatients and emergency admissions are screened for MRSA. As part of our work to improve clinical outcomes we are taking part in a national patient safety programme and have invested in systems to capture patients views on the service we provide. We understand that sometimes a small change can make a big difference for patients.

Job overview
The post holder will provide Talbot Butler ward with a professional focus for leadership and clinical excellence. The post holder will take continuing, 24 hour/ 7 days per week responsibility for the assessment of needs for the service, staff and patients which includes assessment of training, learning and development needs of all ward staff.
The post holder will act as a role model for clinical leadership; setting and upholding agreed clinical standards and enabling patients to receive high quality evidenced based care. They will be a visible presence for all patients and visitors to the area and provide a pivotal role for inter-professional working. They will be responsible for infection prevention and control, budget management, patient safety and experience and compliance with Trust values, policies and providing Best Possible Care.
Talbot Butler ward is a 24 bedded ward, treating Oncology and Haematology patients. The ward contains two, four bedded bays (1 male and 1 female), as well as 16 side rooms. Of these rooms, 6 are negative pressure rooms for patients with infections and 10 are positive pressure rooms for patients who are at risk.
We care for patients with complex oncological and haematological conditions and cancers. We administer a range of complex SACT regimes to our patients and follow through with appropriate aftercare for any patients experiencing side effects as a result of their cancer treatments and those with non-malignant haematological disorders.
We are also a spoke centre for the Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant programme at Leicester Royal Infirmary, caring for patients both before and after stem cell transplants. Appropriate training will be provided.
The post holder will work closely with EAB and EAB Sister. They will also work closely with outpatient areas in the directorate, including Radiotherapy, Haematology outpatients, Chemotherapy suite & Oncology outpatients.
If the post holder does not hold the relevant training or competencies in administration of SACT, training will be provided by our Practice Educator/ Lead SACT nurse via a 6 week, in house module.
Hours of work:
Monday – Friday (5 day working) 08:00 – 16:00
or
Monday – Thursday (4 day working) 07:00 – 17:00
The post holder will be expected to take on Duty Sister shifts in the evening and at weekends and on Bank holidays.
The post holder will also be expected to work at least one night shift every 6 months.
Night – 19:15 – 07:45.

Supporting Clinical Excellence:
Take responsibility for the management and organisation of ward.
To have undertaken or have a willingness to undertake the SACT (systemic anti-cancertherapy) course to facilitate administration of SACT within the department.
Lead as an active member of the nursing team, accountable for your practice and role modelling the highest standards of care to all members of the team.
Communicate proactively with all staff on the clinical condition and treatment plan of patients and ensures accurate nursing records are maintained by all staff.
Assists in leading the team in the assessment, planning, delivery, and evaluation of care of patients admitted to the ward in accordance with Trust and Directorate pathways.
Acts as senior support for staff with recognition and implementation of care for changes in the patient condition.
Leads the team in the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of care of patients admitted to the Ward / department in accordance with Trust and directorate pathways
Actively involves others in communications between patients, their relatives and the multidisciplinary team both within organisation and with external stakeholders to ensure excellent communication.
Has in-depth knowledge of infection control policies, with practical experience and principles in relation to the clinical environment, patient care, the prevention of cross infection, outbreak management, good hand hygiene and environmental cleaning.
Undertake the Trust Corporate and Directorate specific development and competency programmes.
Undertake any expanded roles deemed necessary following the Trusts’ policy ‘Expansion of Professional Practice for Registered Healthcare Practitioners’.
Responsible for the safe supply, storage, administration, checking and disposal of medications including controlled drugs.
Communicates proactively with all staff on the clinical condition and treatment plan of patients and ensures accurate nursing records are maintained by all staff. Actively involved patients, relatives and carers in their treatment and encourages staff to facilitate and enable individuals to assist in their own recovery.
To act as the Confirmer for staff Revalidation when applicable, acting as a resource to empower staff to successfully complete the process
Contributes to and oversees the safe and effective discharge planning of patients informing the discharge team of issues and patient /relative requirements/requests.
Lead Pathway to Excellence® philosophy and Workstreams to support standards.
To ensure that all ward/department management documentation is produced as requested.
Audits and action plans will be produced in liaison with the Matron.
Leadership:
Proactively manages patients and relatives concerns and leads on managing compliance associated with service: Identifies learning from complaints and implements improvements.
Successfully complete and maintain Band 7 competencies and demonstrate compliance through annual appraisal.
Lead by example with drive and enthusiasm, responding appropriately to the needs of patients, families, and carers.
Responsible for the management and leadership of the department, maintaining an appropriate management style that maintains good morale, a team approach to work and a culture which fosters innovation and change.
Sets high standards of nursing care for the department, including department cleanliness, nutrition etc., are maintained so that the patient’s experience is excellent.
Represents the team and organisation at professional meetings as requested and feeds back information appropriately.
With due regard to Risk Management policies and procedures, using local data to ensure the environment is safe for patients, relatives, carers, and staff.
To be a visible, accessible and assertive figure to whom staff, patients and relatives can turn for assistance and guidance.

Assist with developing and using local and national networks to identify and introduce to the directorate best practice in the management and care of patients.
Constructively challenge practices as necessary, which impact on patients care and or staff wellbeing.
Work in partnership with the senior nursing team and other Sisters to ensure the nursing strategy objectives are achieved.
Responsible for the team’s achievement within the Trusts Assessment and Accreditation process Policy and Service Development Responsibilities.
Ensure that the Trust competencies for all staff are implemented, maintained, updated and monitored.
To ensure all ward/department staff receive a formal annual review in line with the Knowledge and Skills Framework, PDP and enabling revalidation.
