Would you like to help lead and support the creation of a new childhood weight management service? A new multi-disciplinary service to support children and young people who have complications of excessive weight (CEW) has been commissioned at the Great North Children’s Hospital. The lead specialist dietitian will work closely with the lead consultant paediatrician, specialist nurse, psychologist and a family support worker to provide weight management support to families across the North East and North Cumbria as part of the CEW network. There will be links with the CEW team in South Tees and regular meetings with other CEW centres nationally for additional clinical supervision and support. The post holder will help to collect outcomes for this new service, in order to support evaluation and the positive impact on the health and wellbeing of the families referred into the service.

This post requires someone with significant clinical experience, ideally including some paediatric and/or weight management experience. The post holder will have excellent communication skills, multi-disciplinary team working, initiative, and a critical approach to practice to contribute as a team in delivering quality patient care. The post holder will be responsible for co-ordinating and evaluating the new service and will meet the demands of the service including research and audit. You will be responsible for the training, guidance and supervision of staff within this specialist area. As you may undertake home visits, a car owner and driving license is required.
As the Lead Specialist Dietitian, this is an opportunity to develop your skills working alongside a dynamic and established paediatric dietetic team, who work within a wide range of areas including Allergy, Bone Marrow Transplant, Cardiothoracic Surgery (based at the Freeman Hospital), Diabetes, Gastroenterology, Ketogenic Diets, Metabolic Disease, Neurology, Oncology, Parenteral Nutrition, PICU, Renal Disease, and Surgery.

- Provides a professional leadership role in specialist areas of dietetic practice, coaching and mentoring staff and students of any discipline.
- If appropriate to the job, role will provide day to day supervision of Dietetic Assistants, Bands 5 and 6 Dietitians.
- Provides highly specialist dietetic assessment, treatment, monitoring and management in one or more speciality areas of dietetics
- Acts as a source of expertise in dietetics practice locally, regionally and nationally.
- Acts as a source of expertise in nutrition support and dietetics to patients, consultants and other health care professionals.
- Delivers education and training with staff at all levels.
- Contributes to designing, planning and implementing research and audit and contributes to publishing results, working in interdisciplinary teams or with other health professionals.
- Works in close association with specialist nurses/other specialised healthcare professionals in named areas in order to deliver integrated services. This may include supplementary prescribing
