Job overview
The Region’s only Finance team dedicated to Clinical Research in the NHS is recruiting. An excellent opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated, enthusiastic, and flexible professional to join our team as a Deputy Directorate Accountant in a newly created role.
Newcastle Hospitals manages circa £30 million of Clinical Research per annum across a complete spectrum of clinical specialties.
It is unique in the area in having large infrastructure grants for the Biomedical Research Centre, Clinical Research Facility, Experimental Cancer Medicines Centre, hosting the Local Clinical Research Network, as well as a significant portfolio of NIHR funded research programmes and commercial research.
The Deputy Directorate Accountant will play a key role in the day to day management of Research Finance, monthly reporting, and as ensuring contractual requirements for all research agreements are met.

The successful postholder will support the Directorate Accountant in all aspects of Research Finance:
- Co-ordinating month end reporting
- Developing strong relationships with budget holders, providing advice and support on all finance aspects including identification of any risk.
- Preparation of forecasts, budgets, and annual returns.
- Liaison with external bodies
- Local Clinical Research Network / Regional Research Delivery Network reporting
- Quarterly and annual reporting on infrastructure grants and research grants
- Process improvement
- Support to strategic work
- Deputising for the Directorate Accountant where appropriate

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To play an advanced role in assisting the Directorate Accountant in the provision of a high quality financial management service and deputising when necessary.
- To work closely with the Directorate Management Team, providing timely and accurate financial and supporting information and advice to facilitate the effective monitoring of specific Directorate and Department’s specific financial position.
- To play an integral role in the formulation of the Trust’s budget.
- To ensure that financial controls are maintained within Corporate Governance guidelines.

- Experience required in the finance department of a complex organisation
- Requires specialist knowledge in financial & accounting procedures
- Diploma level of a professional accountancy qualification or equivalent experience
Desirable criteria
- Previous NHS finance experience
- ECDL or equivalent experience
- Evidence of participation in continuing training & development
Attitude / Aptitude
Essential criteria
- Able to work autonomously to agreed objectives whilst given the freedom to instigate changes, working within broad occupational policies, without reference to Manager
- Ability to make judgements involving facts & situations
- Flexible approach is required to fulfil the duties of the role
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- A good level of education in a numerate subject
- Knowledge of the NHS & NHS Foundation Trusts in particular
