Job overview
Thanks to generous support we are pleased to offer a Margaret Spittle Research Fellowship/Clinical Fellow in Neurosurgery. This is a full-time post based at the Victor Horsley Department of Neurosurgery and The UCL Cancer Institute. The post is designed as a 1-year post at Junior Clinical Fellow level for neurosurgical/neuroscience/oncology focussed individuals who wish to develop their research skills and gain clinical experience in neurosurgery in a major centre of excellence. Half the time will be devoted to a neuro-oncology based research project, and half to clinical service delivery in a neurosurgery post. The focus of the post is to develop the research and clinical skills needed to pursue further training at PhD level or obtain a numbered training post.

The post holder will work as a Junior Clinical Fellow (SHO grade) working on a split pattern of clinical and research duties (50:50)
Clinical Training and Responsibilities
- The post holder will be expected to work at a ST1 equivalent (SHO) level. The post is designed to support the Neurosurgical team, based at The National Hopsital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. The successful post holder will work alongside Trainee doctors at the same level. A full shift out of hours working pattern is in operation in line with service requirements.
- The post is suited for individuals who wish to further a career in Neurosurgery in the United Kingdom. The post does not attract a National Training Number. However reasonable support and supervision will be available for appointees to pursue respective training needs identified. The clinical duties of this post are equivalent to an ST1-2 trainee in Neurosurgery.

Academic component of the job:-
- The academic responsibilities will include working within a team of scientists to deliver an assigned laboratory research project, and additional research projects as agreed.
- Working principally with Mr Ciaran Hill and the Parrinello laboratory group the postholder will undertake a carefully supervised project focussed on brain cancer.
- There will be participation in ongoing clinical trials and the development of new trials, as well as reviewing the outcome of previously treated patients. The aim is to gain research experience/output to improve competitiveness for subsequent applications, including research grants.
- The post holder must complete Good Clinical Practice training prior to commencing the post.
- They will be expected to attend and participate in UCL Cancer Institute training and events
- Quarterly reports on research progress will be expected as a requirement for the post
