Job overview
We are currently looking to recruit a substantive Specialist nurse gynae colposcopist and Oncology. This is a new post for Epsom and St Helier and it requires drive and determination to deliver high quality care and assessment of undifferentiated patients, to ensure a safe and reliable diagnostic and treatment service.
The purpose of this role is to undertake a holistic approach to the diagnosis and management of patients referred to the two week wait urgent suspected cancer gynaecology service. The post holder will act as a resource across the gynaecology unit, building and maintaining key relationships, to deliver exemplary care to women and will act at all times as an advocate for women and their families. Emphasis will be on the enhancement of existing nurse led colposcopy and diagnostic hysteroscopy services.

We operate two busy general hospitals, Epsom Hospital and St Helier Hospital, and run services from other locations, including Sutton Hospital.
St Helier Hospital is home to the South West Thames Renal and Transplantation Unit and Queen Mary's Hospital for Children, while Epsom Hospital is home to the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC). Both Epsom and St Helier hospitals have Accident and Emergency departments (A&E) and Maternity services (Obstetrics).
The Trust also plays an active role in the local healthcare economy. Surrey Downs Health and Care brings together our staff, CSH and the GP groups in Surrey Downs, and Surrey County Council in a partnership to improve care for local people. Also health and care teams from organisations (the London Borough of Sutton, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust, Sutton GP services, The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and South West London & St George’s Mental Health Trust) across Sutton that provide care to Sutton’s older population are coming together to work as one team. The team will ensure people have the right support in place for them to maintain their independence and live healthily and safely at home for as long as possible.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Main duties and responsibilities:
- Clinical Practice
- To undertake independent and comprehensive clinical assessments of patients referred to gynaecological, demonstrating extensive specialist knowledge of a wide-range of presentations in patients of all ages.
- Undertake colposcopy examination to help in excluding and treating suspected cervical abnormalities.
- Undertake hysteroscopy examination to help in excluding and treating suspected endometrial abnormalities.
- To contribute to and coordinate Quality Assurance Inspections in collaboration with colleagues
- Actively participate in the management of patients on the gynaecological cancers and other gynaecology pathways attending MDTs and other relevant fora.
- To provide specialist nursing advice and support to patients, their families and other healthcare professionals following diagnosis, and through treatment
- To ensure continuity of a high standard of evidence based nursing care, assessing health, health related and nursing needs of
- Ordering and performing diagnostic tests
- Making and receiving referrals
- Admitting and discharging women with continence needs and within agreed protocols
- Maintain caseload of clinics with visible presence
- To accept responsibility for own patient caseload, ensuring all patients have an accurate plan of care, which reflects the assessment undertaken and incorporates the issues and recommendations made ensuring clear documentation in the patient’s records
- To follow-up patients as appropriate and ensure all relevant information is available to enable patients to make an informed choice about their treatment
- To provide leadership and act as an effective role model for best nursing practice, acting as an expert in colposcopy and giving clinical advice as necessary.
- To lead standards of care, improving and developing these to ensure they incorporate current professional recommendations (including BSCCP and NHSCSP) and evidence-based
- To attend, prepare and contribute to MDT meetings ensuring all relevant patients are represented
- To deliver a seamless service through the development of enhanced Multidisciplinary team (MDT) processes and communication
- To co-ordinate regular MDM meetings to ensure optimal care is delivered in a timely manner to all women accessing the colposcopy
- To monitor the patient's pathway for women with suspected cervical / vaginal / vulval cancer and ensure cancer targets are met by liaising with colleagues within the joint cancer centre and taking the appropriate action when necessary.
- To participate in the identification and development of clinical protocols and strategies to enhance both the continuity and standard of colposcopy care whilst ensuring equity of access to the service

- To liaise with local community, social services, and voluntary organisations to develop existing services for clients, carers and health professionals
