Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is situated on the west coast of Lancashire, with services covering the local authority areas of Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre. Job overview
The Apprentice Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) will be employed in a 3-year Degree Apprenticeship role within Cardiac Theatres at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Academic study will be delivered through formal education both in-house and through either the University of Bolton or University of Central Lancashire. A rotation programme through different clinical areas will be undertaken as part of this course. Travel to either of these HEIs will be required either 1 day per week or block attendance weeks.
The Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) Apprenticeship is a new and innovative route to acquire the knowledge, skills, and behaviours across different areas of perioperative care. We are proud to have witnessed the success of our first Apprentices completing their degrees and joining our team.
The ODP degree apprentice programme can be accessed from a range of health care settings and is an ideal opportunity to undertake work based experiential and reflective learning whilst being employed. Throughout your 3-year degree you will study alongside other student ODP’s on their BSc (Hons) Operating Department Practitioner programme. You will work and be assessed in a variety of specialist areas such as cardio-thoracic, cardiology, general surgery, orthopaedic surgery, ENT, obstetric surgery, post-anaesthetic care (recovery) and intensive care.

- To learn the role of the ODP in an operating theatre setting.
- To be pro-active in seeking opportunities to develop their own knowledge and skills, achieving clinical competencies within agreed timeframes.
- To seek support / guidance in a timely manner if any difficulties are encountered.
- Work with the practice educator to agree on a clinical placement schedule and identify learning opportunities/needs. These may be gained in other departments/Trusts to ensure competencies are met beyond the cardiothoracic specialty.
- Contribute to the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care as part of the multi-disciplinary team.
- Develop the knowledge to interpret information and be skilled in taking appropriate action(s) to achieve the planned outcome thus contributing to the maintenance of a safe clinical environment.
- Practice in accordance with BTH, guidelines, standards, and statutory requirements and operate within defined competency boundaries.
- Work a 30-hour week whilst on clinical placement with supernumerary status and attend university on the given day. Apprentices will be encouraged to take their Trust annual leave during university academic holidays however this can be flexible.
On completion of the degree programme, and on entering the Health Care Professionals Council (HCPC) register, the Apprentice will then be eligible to apply for a Band 5 Theatre Practitioner position (subject to vacancy availability).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
During the Apprenticeship the post-holder will work towards completing the BSc Operating Department Practice Degree, completing continuous assessments in the form of academic work and undertaking clinical competencies under the supervision of practice supervisors/assessors/clinical educators (mentors) who will be Registered Theatre Practitioners.
