  • Take the lead on developing the integrated Communications Strategy for NHS England working with national, regional and directorate functions, based on insight, with effective delivery and evaluation of that strategy.

  • Lead strategic collaboration and coordination across national, regional and directorate communications functions in delivering against the national communications and organisational strategic objectives.

  • Ensure delivery of ad hoc communication plans and strategies where necessary.

  • Ensure NHS England’s communications and engagement is based on insight.

  • Support the Executive group with strategic communications planning and provide senior strategic counsel to the organisation’s leadership.

  • Oversee the work to improve communications expertise across the NHS, and inside NHS England. Ensuring the best, most cost effective and appropriate training is available for those across the communications division.

  • Work across a multiple range of high-level senior stakeholders, including government and senior civil servants and deal with complex political situations.

  • Ensure PACE has a deliverable development offer.

  • Drive innovation, creative thinking, and alternative ways of communicating with new and core audiences.

§  Ensure the effective running of the Communications Business Operations function, including HR, recruitment, and budgetary matters.

Salary Progression

Applicants will commence at the bottom of Band 9 with a full-time starting salary of £99,891, with a pay step increase after 5 years’ service.
 
For posts based in Inner London, the above salaries will include the additional supplement of 20% of basic salary, subject to a minimum payment of £5,132 per annum and a maximum payment of £7,746 per annum.
 
This is offered in accordance with NHS Terms and Conditions and is based on office location.

Essential criteria
  • Substantial experience of creating strategic communications plans for a large organisation and providing strategic communications and engagement support to directorate senior leaders, especially at senior level in the NHS or other public healthcare related industry
  • Substantial experience of working within, and with, national news media and in a fast-paced environment, delivering against competing priorities and deadlines while also directing the work of teams/individuals
  • Strong understanding of the expectations on public sector communications to be open, honest and non-political with experience of leading and delivering complex change and strategy development programmes in a politically sensitive and complex environment
