Job overview
An opportunity has arisen for a motivated individual to join the Nuclear Medicine Physics team as a pre-registration Research Scientist within the Durham, Darlington and Hartlepool unit of Northern Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering on a 12-month fixed term basis.
The unit performs approximately 7,000 nuclear medicine imaging, non-imaging and therapy investigations across the three departments. SPECT-CT is undertaken in an expanding number of examinations at the University Hospital of Hartlepool, and Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham have recently installed new gamma cameras. Bone densitometry is also performed at University Hospital of North Durham and Darlington Memorial Hospital. The unit provides specialist advice and support to other centres, including the Breast Unit at University Hospital of North Tees where radioactive Iodine-125 seeds are used for breast tumour and nodal localisation prior to excision surgery. Work to build a new state-of-the-art central radiopharmacy at the University Hospital of North Durham has commenced and is due to complete in the autumn.

This is a fixed term post that will provide the successful applicant an excellent opportunity to work with a friendly team and gain experience in a nuclear medicine department supporting the work of 6 clinical scientists and 18 technologists within the unit. It will provide additional experience to anyone wishing to pursue the STP in Medical Physics.
The successful applicant will support the clinical scientists in all aspects of service provision, including equipment testing, database management, quality systems management and promoting research and development within the unit.
Working base will be the University Hospital of Hartlepool, however the successful applicant will be expected to travel between 4 hospital sites (University Hospital of Hartlepool, University Hospital of North Tees, University Hospital of North Durham and Darlington Memorial Hospital) to aid in service provision.
Applicants must have an appropriate science degree, although applicants with a BSc (Hons) degree and relevant experience will be considered.

Essential criteria
- First or second class honours degree or equivalent in a relevant subject
Desirable criteria
- Higher degree in Medical Physics or related subject
- Membership of IPEM
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
- Specialist knowledge and skills relevant to the area of work to post graduate level
- Experience of research and development working as part of a team
- Knowledge of the role of a clinical scientist (medical physicist) in nuclear medicine
- Knowledge of the principles underpinning equipment QA
- Good knowledge of IT software packages (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) and knowledge of applying them
- Knowledge of legislation, standards and safety principles relating to the relevant area
- Basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology relevant to the area of work
- Basic knowledge of clinical hazards and infection control
