The place to work in pathology
We are looking for top talent to join the UK’s leading and fastest growing pathology company – a scientific organisation with a clinical purpose.
Working in partnership with our service partners, Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospitals, King’s College Hospital and Princess Royal University Hospital we aim to set the standard for the future of pathology.
Job overview
We are looking for three well organised senior clinical bioinformaticians to support the operations of the Synnovis Bioinformatics Team. These individuals will support the GLH Bioinformatics Lead and the Bioinformatics Operations Lead to oversee the development of the service and its day-to-day running.
These posts will be part of a newly identified staff structure, leading the development of a single bioinformatics team across Synnovis. with each post holder taking the lead for different aspects of the service, Translation, Data and Training.
The successful candidates will have a strong track record of clinical bioinformatics service delivery, with experience leading projects. They should have extensive knowledge and experience of working with NGS pipelines and large datasets, and strong programming and troubleshooting experience. Clear communication is essential. They will be expected to take the initiative, support continual quality improvement and prioritise workload.
Applicants must be HCPC registered.
These new roles provide a unique opportunity to shape the bioinformatics service within Synnovis and the GLH. The post holders will be responsible for growing the service in their designated lead area, while also contributing to the development of new services such as whole genome sequencing.
The bioinformatics team is at an exciting stage in development, with work to combine the two services from KCH and GSTT into a single large and growing bioinformatics team to support all Synnovis services currently in progress. These new posts are integral to the new team structure, providing oversight to designated areas (Translation, Data and Training), in order to deliver the service at the expected high standard, whilst also ensuring the future proofing of the service.
Synnovis has a strong track record in training and development of its staff. This is a senior role in a discipline where there is a national shortage of state registered clinical bioinformatic staff. This new position will support the team to expand the STP staff numbers to enable the training and development of the next generation of bioinformaticians. The general aim is to build the team to deliver the service requirements in co-ordination with the GLH training lead and the nominated training lead within the bioinformatics team.
Advert
The post holders will join a newly established leadership structure for the bioinformatics team, working with the GLH Bioinformatics Lead and the Synnovis Bioinformatics Operations Lead to support day to day service delivery and ongoing service developments.
They will be expected to contribute to all aspects of service delivery and development, including supporting training, adhering to governance requirements, and ensuring services are compliant with ISO15189 and UKAS accreditation requirements
Each post holder will perform a defined leadership role in either Training, Data or Translation.
Training Lead (8a)
To recognise the importance of not only the training of STPs within Synnovis and the GLH, but the significant contribution the individual in this role would play in the national training schemes through collaboration with the NSHCS (e.g. syllabus writing, recruitment and assessment). The section would have STPs and pre-registration staff to support, with the potential for apprenticeships to be included in the future. Training would be managed within the team with the GLH Training lead and their team coordinating at a higher level. This individual will also be responsible for supporting the training and development of all staff within the team, including overseeing staff competency assessment, and identifying opportunities for training and development of new skills.
Data Lead (8a)
To properly leverage the huge amounts of data held by the genomics services, there is a need for an individual dedicated to managing our data, including databases, data storage and archiving. This role would have two main purposes – to ensure availability of databases to the business, and to work towards data consolidation, improving management reporting and eventually AI ‘readiness’. Development of new databases and applications would be coordinated by the operations lead (with the GLH Lead) working alongside the Translational Lead, where applicable.
Translational Lead (8a)
To genuinely take advantage of new technologies, there is a need for a dedicated individual guiding new development. Away from the routine running of NGS services, they would head up improvements to existing services, readying them to be put into service, testing new technologies such as long read sequencing, ctDNA, pharmacogenomics. Optimising pipelines in the cloud environment and reducing cloud compute costs. They would work closely with the scientific leads and translational lab groups within Synnovis.
