Job overview
Would you like to develop a career working with patients in the exciting and constantly developing field of nuclear medicine (molecular imaging)? Are you a team player? Would you like to be paid (as an apprentice) whilst earning a degree? Would you like your university fees to paid by your employer?
Nuclear Medicine Practitioners work in multidisciplinary teams to diagnose and treat disease using radionuclides and radiation in its various forms. These apprenticeships are ideal for people who enjoy basic physics and have a desire to work with patients. During the apprenticeship you will:
- complete an integrated 3 year B.Sc. in Healthcare Science (nuclear medicine) at the University of the West of England (UWE), Bristol (three, one week residential periods each year, plus online learning);
- learn from qualified practitioners to deliver all technical aspects within nuclear medicine; and
- contribute to research and development projects.

The successful candidate will be based at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals (Royal Victoria Infirmary & Freeman Hospital sites).
There will be a 2-stage interview process:
Apprentice skills assessment day – Saturday 6th July 2024
Interviews – Tuesday 9th July & Wednesday 10th July 2024
Start date for fixed term post: 9th September 2024
Start date at UWE: 16th September 2024

Successful candidates will be expected to perform a range of duties in the Nuclear Medicine clinical department under direct supervision. Work-based training includes:
- Working and communicating with a multidisciplinary team consisting of Consultant Radiologists, Clinical Scientists, Clinical Technologists/Radiographers, Nurse Specialists, and administration staff.
- Patient welfare – training will be delivered on the implementation of local and Trust policies relating to issues such as infection control, IV administration, life support, manual handling of patients etc.
- Safe use of expensive imaging equipment (Gamma cameras, SPECT CT systems) and perform patient investigations.
- Computer processing of commonly acquired studies.
- Performing radioactive administrations to patients.
- Radiation protection including advice to patients.
- Manufacture and release of radiopharmaceuticals in a radiopharmacy.
- Manipulation of patient samples and process results.
- Implementation of local/Trust policy and local standard operating procedures for patient investigations.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To be eligible for an apprenticeship you must:
- Have the right to work and remain in the UK.
- Have lived in the UK for at least 3 years.
- Provide evidence of required English and Maths qualifications.

- You will not be considered if you have an equivalent or higher qualification in the same or a very similar subject.
- You must not be engaged in any other funded training or education programme.
- We cannot sponsor applicants during or on successful completion of the apprenticeship so please ensure you meet visa status eligibility.
- The Apprentice Health Care Practitioner (Nuclear Medicine) is responsible for following the technical and analytical curriculum and progressing through work-based experience in the Department.
- The post holder will be expected to perform a range of demanding roles under supervision, as well as occasional duties in response to specific elements of the curriculum.
- Successful completion of an integrated 3 year BSc (Hons) in Healthcare Science (relevant discipline); gaining skills to undertake the role of a healthcare science practitioner and eligibility to join the accredited Register of Clinical Technologists (RCT) held by the Academy for Healthcare Science.
- Learn from qualified staff to provide all technical aspects within scope of practice.
- Learn to perform a range of specialist healthcare science activities.
- Become involvement in research and development projects.
- To carry out any other reasonable duties to achieved learning may be required, which are commensurate with the grade and nature of the post to meet the learning outcomes.
