The Health Care Apprenticeship programme is an exciting opportunity that will enable you to train to become a fully registered Nurse through a work-based learning arrangement.
Nursing is a rewarding career, with the chance to make a significant difference to people’s lives. Communication and interpersonal skills are essential, as are demonstrating the Health Board values through everything you do.
The Hywel Dda University Health Board Health Care Apprenticeship programmes combine a variety of courses into one, providing a direct pathway to nursing. On completion of the programme, you will be a qualified nurse, without the university debt to accompany. You will be learning whilst you earn throughout the programme.
During the programme there will be Gateway Reviews, with the first taking place 3 months into your apprenticeship. The Gateway Reviews check your progress to ensure you are receiving the right support to succeed and that your motivation and commitment is maintained.
There are pay increments (subject to change in line with the Agenda for Change pay reviews) associated with passing your Gateway Review, once competencies have been met your pay will reflect the skills demonstrated.

Working alongside registered nurses and other health care professionals, this programme will give you an insight into health care at an introductory level to begin, involving working with a mentor within patient areas, preparing and delivering care to patients.
This role will allow you to become familiar with the layout of the hospital, as well as the standards expected within a healthcare environment. You will interact with patients and develop your communication skills, whilst displaying the qualities needed to become a nurse.
Throughout all of this, you will still be supported by your mentor, the college, and the Apprenticeship Academy team.
As your role progresses, your competencies will increase in line with your learning.
Full Programme Qualification Pathway
Foundation Apprenticeship: Level 2 à Apprenticeship in Clinical Health Care: Level 3 à Certificate in Health Care: Level 4 à Degree Adult General Nursing
When you have become a Registered Nurse, you will be expected to remain employed with the Health Board for a minimum of two years.

Hywel Dda University Health Board is the planner and provider of NHS healthcare services for people in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and its bordering counties. Our 11,000 members of staff provide primary, community, in-hospital, mental health and learning disabilities services for around 384,000 people across a quarter of the landmass of Wales. We do this in partnership with our three local authorities and public, private and third sector colleagues, including our volunteers, through:
Four main hospitals: Bronglais General in Aberystwyth, Glangwili General in Carmarthen, Prince Philip in Llanelli and Withybush General in Haverfordwest;
Seven community hospitals: Amman Valley and Llandovery in Carmarthenshire; Tregaron, Aberaeron and Cardigan in Ceredigion; and Tenby and South Pembrokeshire Hospital Health and Social Care Resource Centre in Pembrokeshire;
48 general practices (six of which are managed practices), 47 dental practices (including three orthodontic), 99 community pharmacies, 44 general ophthalmic practices (43 providing Eye Health Examination Wales and 34 low vision services) and 17 domiciliary only providers and 11 health centres;
Numerous locations providing mental health and learning disabilities services;
Highly specialised and tertiary services commissioned by the Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee, a joint committee representing seven health boards across Wales.

What does the Health Care Apprenticeship Programme involve?
- A comprehensive induction which will prepare you for your role within the Health Board
- You will be supported by a workplace mentor, an experienced health care professional
- You will have paid time off to develop your learning through studying with the learning providers
- You will have an academic mentor assigned from the learning providers at each stage
- You will attend workshops where you will have the opportunity to discuss and share ideas
- You will work towards vocational qualifications, building the levels as you grow in confidence and experience

- You must be aged 16+ in September 2024
- You must have current right to work in the UK and have lived in the UK for the last three years
- You must be a kind, caring person who is passionate about helping others
- You must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- You must be able to demonstrate a willingness to work hard and a commitment to nursing
- You must be committed to studying and working simultaneously which requires a high level of dedication
- You must not be in any formal government-funded education at the time of starting the Health Care Apprentice Programme
