Job overview
If you are an inspirational nurse with expertise in head and neck speciality with a commitment to delivering excellent patient care to Head and Neck and Thyroid patients, then we would like to hear from you for this exciting new role in advanced practice.
Our Head and Neck unit provides local and tertiary services from diagnosis to treatment and follow up for head and neck and thyroid patients. We are a busy referral unit for suspected head and neck cancer and provide faster diagnosis service in line with the best-timed pathway for head and neck cancer diagnosis.
Our priority is to reassure patients at the earliest opportunity if they are no longer suspected to have cancer. We are the specialist surgery hub for patients undergoing major head and neck oncology surgery in north central and northeast London. UCLH provides non-surgical treatment modalities for head and neck and thyroid cancer including proton beam radiotherapy, medical and clinical oncology inclusive of clinical trial portfolio, radioactive iodine.

The head and neck advanced nurse practitioner (ANP) will provide specialist advanced practice as a senior nurse incorporating non-medical prescribing and non-medical referrals for imaging and running independent nurse led clinics.
The ANP will be able to practice with autonomy and with the parent surgical consultants forming clinical decisions in the diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of patients within the H&N speciality in A&E, ward, and clinic environments.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced head and neck nurse looking for a new challenge who has advanced skills and expertise in head and neck speciality who would want to work at a self-directed advanced level of practice. The post holder will require excellent communication skills and a passion for quality patient care, teaching, and education. Informal conversations are encouraged.

Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse
- Educated to master’s level Advanced Practice or equivalent level, or equivalent experience of working at a senior level but working towards Masters.
- Be a non-medical prescriber or working towards
- Be a non-medical referrer for imaging.
- Post-graduate management, leadership or specialist qualification or previous experience
Desirable criteria
- Quality Improvement qualification experience

- In depth expert knowledge in Head and Neck benign and Oncology speciality
- Experience as Band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist or Ward sister at senior leadership and management level for more than 2 years.
- Competent skills specific to Head and Neck advanced Practice, Altered Airway Management, Physical Assessment of Head and Neck , Nasendoscope.
- Experience and knowledge of the components of Advanced Practice, non-medical prescribing, non-medical referrals for imaging and associated clinical governance, risk management and assurance function; current NHS national policies, standards, requirements and directions that relate to measuring and improving the quality and safety of patient care
- Evidence of managing successful project and / or operational performance and improvement.
- Evidence of post qualifying and continuing professional development
