Job overview
This appointment is attached to the Peterborough Adult Locality Team. Duties include assessment and management of patients newly referred to the teams as well as supporting the urgent care systems in both teams. The post holder will provide medical support and leadership to the multidisciplinary team of CPN’s, Social Workers, Psychologists, Occupational Therapists and other disciplines who will be available to support the post holder in conjunction with the incumbent Consultant Psychiatrists.

- Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the assessment and management of patients with acute mental disorders.
- To work within the multidisciplinary specialist pathway and share responsibility for day to day management of the services, including the team’s physical health clinics.
- Teaching and training of junior staff, medical students and other disciplines.
- To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance, audit and research.
- To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing professional development (CPD).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Duties of the post
This appointment is attached to the Peterborough Adult Locality Team. Duties include assessment and management of patients newly referred to the teams as well as supporting the urgent care systems in both teams. The post holder will provide medical support and leadership to the multidisciplinary team of CPN’s, Social Workers, Psychologists, Occupational Therapists and other disciplines who will be available to support the post holder in conjunction with the incumbent Consultant Psychiatrists.

- Attendance at weekly education meetings.
- Opportunities to undertake service audit, working within a Clinical Governance audit plan. Support is available through the Clinical Governance Committee Convenor and the Clinical Governance facilitator.

Community Adult Mental Health Services
Adult Community Care Adult Community services have recently been reorganized into five locality teams:
* Cambridge North Adult Locality team: Union House, Cambridge
* Cambridge South Adult Locality team: Union House, Cambridge
* Huntingdon Adult Locality team: Newtown Centre, Huntingdon
* Fenland Adult Locality team: Agenoria House, Wisbech
* Peterborough & Borders Adult Locality team: Gloucester Centre, Peterborough
These locality teams have replaced the Intake and Treatment Teams, Rehabilitation and
Recovery Teams, and Assertive Outreach teams. Each new locality team is delivering care and treatment following clinical pathways. The pathways cover the common mental health illnesses:
* Affective disorders – including anxiety, depression, bi-polar disorder
* Recovery Psychosis – longer term psychotic illness
The locality teams have strong links with the GPs and primary care services through senior mental health clinicians working with groups of GP practices.
Community care continue to provide two specialist services operating across all localities:
* CAMEO, which is an early intervention in psychosis service for people experiencing
their first episode psychosis
* Personality Disorders Community Service – for people with personality disorder.
Teaching & Research
Cambridge offers unrivalled opportunities for research and for collaboration with University Departments and MRC Units. A wide range of research is conducted by the University Department of Psychiatry and by NHS staff, including psychosocial, cognitive, neuroendocrine and psycho-pharmacological studies into depression; epidemiological, molecular biological, neuropathological, neuropsychological and neurochemical studies into Schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s Disease; psychology; epidemiology and cognitive treatment of appetite disorders; psychosocial aspects of neurological disorders; care of the elderly in the community, evaluation of health services; psychiatric illness in mentally handicapped adolescents; child psychiatry; forensic psychiatry; and history of psychiatry.
There is also scope for research and teaching links with the University Department of Psychology and the Institute of Criminology.
Study and Training
- a) The applicant is expected to participate in continuing professional development (CPD). Study leave is provided for this purpose, and the appointee will be entitled to apply to the Trust Study Leave Committee for a contribution to funding this activity
- b) Study leave will be granted in accordance with paragraphs 250-254 of the Terms and Conditions of Service of Hospital Medical and Dental Staff and to local conditions agreed by the Study Leave Committee.
- c) There is an active programme of weekly clinical meetings at The Cavell Centre in Peterborough, which all junior staff are encouraged to attend. A detailed programme is available from the postgraduate medical education centre administrator.
