Guy’s and St Thomas’ is among the UK’s busiest and most successful NHS foundation trusts. We provide a full range of hospital and community services for people in south London and as well as specialist care for patients from further afield including cancer, renal, orthopaedic, respiratory and cardiovascular services.
Guy’s is home to the largest dental school in Europe and a £160 million Cancer Centre opened in 2016. As part of our commitment to provide care closer to home, in 2017 we also opened a cancer centre and a kidney treatment centre at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup. St Thomas’ has one of the largest critical care units in the UK and one of the busiest emergency departments in London. It is also home to Evelina London Children’s Hospital.
Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions.
Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.
In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. Our merger provides a once in a generation opportunity to build a lasting, world-renowned heart and lung centre, providing the highest quality care for patients and conducting world-leading research.
We have a reputation for clinical excellence and high quality teaching and research. We are part of King’s Health Partners, one of eight accredited UK academic health sciences centres. In partnership with King’s College London we have dedicated clinical research facilities including an MHRA accredited Phase I clinical trials unit.
Patients are at the heart of everything we do and we pride ourselves on ensuring the best possible patient experience as well as safe, high quality care. We are proud to have one of the lowest mortality rates in the NHS. Following a comprehensive Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection in 2019 we maintained our overall rating of ‘good’. Our adult community services achieved a rating of ‘outstanding’.
The commitment of our 23,500 staff is key to our success. We are one of the largest local employers and we aim to develop and support all our staff so they are able to deliver high quality, safe and efficient care. The 2019 NHS staff survey results show that we have one of the most engaged and motivated workforces in the NHS. We know this has a positive impact on the care provided to our patients.
We have one of the most ambitious capital investment programmes anywhere in the NHS.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for ST3 and above Clinical Fellows aiming to achieve specialist registration in Anaesthetics through the CESR equivalence route in the South East London region.
The CESR programme will run over a period of 1 to 4 years, depending on the candidate's needs and the availability of training spaces in participating hospitals. It will include working across three hospitals: Guy’s and St. Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (including Evelina Paediatric Hospital), Lewisham General Hospital, and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN). Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospital will be the main employer, but the Clinical fellows will have their time divided roughly equally between GSTT and Lewisham hospitals, with a 3-month rotation for neuro-anaesthesia at NHNN if required.
The programme consists of structured rotation through all stage 2 and 3 anaesthetic modules to allow the fellow to accrue the required evidence needed for a successful CESR application.
Advert
The successful candidate will be working alongside our existing trainee anaesthetists with the same rotational opportunities to gain the necessary experience to support a CESR application. They will be spending half of their time working in an elective clinical setting and half of their time participating in the on-call service rota matched to their experience to date and experience requirements.
The post offers a mix of clinical training, teaching and supervised service experience. There are also ample opportunities for audit, QI, teaching and management experienced. On call commitments will be on a full shift pattern of 1:8 rotating within the anaesthetic departments of the hospital sites. Specific on call duties at the individual sites will depend on the fellow’s individual experience and the requirements of the site.

The posts are for 3-month durations and will provide experience in neurosurgical anaesthesia (including all aspects of neuroradiology) and neurointensive care. The Clinical Fellow will perform the duties of the other SpRs within the department covering theatres, interventional neuroradiology and neurocritical care, both medical and surgical.
There will be opportunities to become involved in clinical audit / quality improvement projects as appropriate during the time at Queen Square
On Call Commitment and Timetable
The Clinical Fellows will participate in the 1B shift system with the anaesthetic registrars. There is a separate tier of cover for the neurocritical care unit and an on call neurocritical care consultant, but the registrars provide additional cover for neurocritical care and oversee the trainees.
Research
The research interests of the department include clinical neuroanaesthesia, airway management, acute pain, neurological intensive care, neurosurgical intensive care, and brain monitoring. Fellows will be actively encouraged to participate in one of the many ongoing research programmes within the department when possible or to develop their own interests.
Study and Training
Weekly departmental meetings and teaching are held on a Wednesday afternoon and Friday morning afternoon, as are regular Multidisciplinary Morbidity and Mortality Meetings. There are many other regular programmes of postgraduate meetings throughout the hospital both in the Neurosurgical and Neurology Department that would be of interest.
There are also regular teaching sessions in the clinical situation by consultant staff and trainees are encouraged to seek senior guidance. Appointees will be expected to take part in the weekly departmental meetings and to teach the staff on the Intensive Care Units.
